How The Doomed Was Made; Minimalist Mechanics & Narrative Wargames | The Doomed Week
August 13, 2023 by avernos
Gerry sits down with the designer of Osprey Games' The Doomed, Chris McDowall and discusses the philosophy he had when bringing the game to life. We dive into his previous gaming and writing experience and how The Doomed became a minimalist mechanic system which still brings complexity and flavour to a narrative wargame in the midst of an apocalypse.

We discuss reducing the statistics, abilities and modifiers of the game to their bare essentials allowing you to focus on the Horrors and Conflicts that you find within the game rules of The Doomed. This in turn leads to exploring the way it matches the aesthetic of the world and encourages collaborative narrative wargaming.

good to know the thoughts on how and why the game is made
Great!
Dooooooomed! Still!
Ok so a masterpiece is born. Has Chris anything incredible coming into our nightmares next year?
Interesting insights
Right gonna sit and watch this one now. Should be interesting
?
The horrors having their tables and unique reactions makes me think of clues and the narrative elements of Rangers of Shadow Deep and Silver Bayonet. I think adding unique elements in this way really works and adds interest in a positive way without getting complicated.
Really original mechanics from this game!
1296 possible just saying
Chris Mcdowall could quite possibly be a genius. Loving the simplicity of these rules yet how harsh the game can be. I am so over playing competitively and much prefer a simple set of rules where the game can tell a good story. Bravo
No w to dig out some Cthulhu figures
Game engines and car design might not be too far off. I’d say the work off camera has made for good play videos here and even better now with the creative mind.
There’s certainly an appeal to a game without needless complications!
Nice one 🙂
This game looks fun!
Speaking to the designer is always an interesting insight, thank you.
I have to respect a design philosophy that adds up to “it won’t be all things to all people, but it sure is going to be something different for some people”.
Yes that’s a defo fun game with plenty of ways to get killed.
