Getting Started In Drowned Earth
August 31, 2018 by dignity
James Baldwin, creator of Drowned Earth, gives us a breakdown of the different factions to get you up and running in the game.
Drowned Earth is a sci-fi miniatures game set in a world of living dinosaurs and flooded cities.
If you missed it we had a chat with James on a previous Weekender. Check it out here: Interview with James.
Are you as keen as Sam for some dino shenanigans?
This game has been on my radar for a while the aspect that most appeals to me is the general background of flooded over grown scenery (would be great fun building a board, I loved what Bow did with their first Drowned Earth board really atmospheric) and the dynamic game play (swinging across gaps, firing to interrupt movement etc).
The faction that most appeals to me is the Artifice, as I love the models and the theme, closely followed by the Militia.
I think the Setting alows for some very cool terrain. I guess, that is what most appeals to me. And, Dinosaurs, of course!
Cheers!
The bondsman’s group Sound an interesting lot would be good to have an all dinosaur option in the future.
looks very cool – I’m already partial to a bit of post apocalyptic gaming and having the setting this game does sets off so many sparks for my imagination. Always wanted to do a drowned city! Besides, what’s not to like about dinosaurs or big apes? I’m a 90’s kid so Jurassic Park and the 2001 reboot of Planet of the Apes are ingrained into my childhood. This game ticks sooo many boxes.
The fact that you can have multiple races in the same band is what I like. The Artefacters and Militia have an immediate appeal for me.
Well… DINOSAURS! And I’m not even joking. I might even have to get myself a well-chosen box just to paint some dinosaurs (with or without riders… that dino-rider looked awesome!!)
This game keeps tempting me and I’m kicking myself for not jumping in on the KS. The game aspect that really gets me is the dynamic movement mechanic. It’s a risk/reward choice that really enhances what is usually just a simple measurement in most games.
As for favourite faction, I think I lean towards rhe Artefacters for the sculpts, but like the Militia too
I like diversity in my games so i like the fact that faction aren’t based on races. And dinos of course.
just think of the terrain options multi level skyscrapers crashed into one another pits waterfalls the mind boggles and my 3d printer would be worn out. plus id have to have a friendly raptor called blue
Dinosaurs – I might even be able to sell the game to the wife and kid on that and add a strong female influence in all fractions.
What caught my attention is the environment we see on the box cover art, it’s really great. I didn’t know about the dinosaurs, but of course it adds a lot to the excitment! But what may get me into it is still the setting, with cool narrative in-game effects that may help or hinder you based on your faction.
The best part for me is the narrativ aspect in the game. Swing and climb ropes, swim and getting attacked by piranhas… Also the terrain buildig. My Faction of choice are the Bondsmen and the Wayfarers.
I’m loving the freedom the game offers, and the setting too, the idea of a reclaimed earth that a lot of post apoc settings miss, oh and…. DINOSAURS!!!
Though a question for those who have a rulebook, can you make your own crews or are they all named characters so to speak.
The thing I like best about Drowned Earth is the mix of races and genders within a faction itself and the world. I will probably pick up the Artefacters in the near future as I love models. The leader Nix with the Bow and Slethssk the scout are fantastic; my favourite models in the range so far. As far as the game mechanics go I really like the varying degrees of failure and success; I will how ever need to wait on over all game play as I have just read the rules and have not played Drowned Earth yet.
I’m getting this if anyone in the Cincinnati/NKY area would like to try it out. Big fan of the cinematic nature and awesome terrain the game promotes.
I like that the factions aren’t separated by race. This restriction doesn’t always make complete sense to me in other games. I really like that this means every faction has a variety of interesting looking and fun to paint models. You don’t pick based on wanting the gorillas, or the lizard men.
It is hard to say what is not appealing about this game. The cinematic/parkour style to the rules is definitely a plus. The backstory to the game is interesting and well developed. The possibilities for the tabletop terrain is outstanding. Maybe the most appealing part is the fact that it has all of these wonderful aspects all rolled into one!
i love the idea of bring in very very very big dinos like on the cover art like moving terrain peaces wold be amazing.
Very fun video to watch, love how much Sam is enjoying himself! I have to say I do love the dinosaurs, whether as trusty companions or dangerous local fauna (or both!). That being said, I think the fact the world feels very real, and a little different helps a lot. A full on big RPG book for this would be great, or at least a Savage Worlds supplement. As for a faction, I need to study them more before I could say, though the sculpts are pretty great across the range, so it might come down more to play-style.
Dinosaurs? Nope… killer piranhas!!
