The instar matte varnish is the best one I’ve used recently
I’ve been using the Vallejo Polyurethane Matt varnish, the colourless transparent one. I find it almost as shiny as the satin varnish which is a bit of a disappointment but I intend to finish the bottle since I paid for it and can live with the results.
I do have a small pot the the acrylic matt varnish which I find very matt (for my use anyway). I think I’ll get a bigger pot in future, and use the polyurethane gloss version as an initial layer. It’s a shame about the mecha needing so much shaking.
Certainly an enlightening helpful video.
nice i thing go for the matt varnish !?
what about compared to spray cans Gerry.
I’ve not used a spray in years after frosting my dog’s of war and leading me to repaint them. Sprays are generally the same finish but the propellant means cold and humidity can really effect them if you’re unlucky
That very true.
Very informative video. I will try the mecha and ultra.
For ease the ultra probably edges it. Although maybe if I hadn’t shelved the mecha for 8 months I may not have had as much bother. Either way both give excellent results
Cheers. I’ve been in the hobby around 10 years and I learnt something today that I should probably have known from the beginning.
I have my moments
I have been using AK ultra matte and have had issues with the matte medium clumping making it clog my airbrush something horrible. It might be an age issue as when i first got it it was fine. might be an issue with the air in the bottle. i had two bottles so when i opened the second bottle i de-cantered it into 4 dropper bottles.
that’s what happened with my mecha but I’ve had it over 6 months while the ultra matte literally arrived the morning of filming, I was just waiting on it. So it could be whatever they add, or maybe leave out, to help the matting effect is what causes it
I always use Clear Matt 34102 from Revell’s Spray Color-line. It has never failed me – you can even douse a mini with that stuff, and it dries to a very thin, ultra-matt finish which remains true to the unvarnished colours. It never frosted on me, either. You can also use it over a super-glossy varnish and all is fine.
Also, I always pick up my minis at their base, and whoever does not may loose a hand or two…
Nice walkthrough as always.. I’ve just picked up one of the small Vallejo dropper bottle varnishes each to try them out: gloss, satin and matt. The flow improver tip is very useful but I’ll use my cheapo Chinese airbrush for it just in case. ?
What are those little metal cups you put the Matte varnish in? I have the AK normal matte but I’ve always abstained from putting it through my airbrush, fear of cleaning I guess. Your right though, I think the Artist MAtte is the best call if your on a budget. Thanks Gerry

I like them because they have the pouring spout and are easily cleaned
I just bought these 2 weeks ago after seeing them in a NJM video. Changed my life.
that’s probably where I spotted them I’ve been spamming a lot of his videos on repeat while playing with oils
Thanks for this @avernos. I’ve been in hobby mourning since Rustoleum discontinued Testors spray laquer, the rattlecan version of Dullcote. I like my historicals to have a super matt finish which is a problem given that I treat them all to the toughened (but super glossy) hide of AP dip. It is good to see how the airbrush on matt options go down and that there are options now for minimal shine. I’ve not had much luck with varnish through my airbrush and always get it gummed up and needing to be taken apart, user error I know. I’ve found… Read more »
Absolutely fabulous vid, Gerry. I’m always searching for that matt varnish nirvana. Recently tried a bunch of varnishes and was super impressed with the AK ultra. I was writing a project update about it but will have to go back and rethink as you’ve answered a number of questions I still had about the physical make up of the stuff. Any thoughts about brush on compared to airbrush? I have found with the AK ultra you have to very careful to avoid pools forming which will dry frosty white. I was considering dumping the gloss varnish first but will have… Read more »
