I love the idea for tank aerials. Might have to try that myself.
Other uses I’ve seen is to make debris for bases or to pimp up terrain, things like beams and girders, and of course not to mention you can build a Borg cube if you have enough sprues ?
Oh, also I’ve seen several videos where people make a kind of filler paste from dissolved sprue in poly cement although I haven’t tried that.
Plasticard gives better results than sprue, it’s super handy stuff make some and never look back.
Ddint you know that Gerry is attempting to build a full size Borg Cube in his and all his neighbours back gardens!
What’s a borg?
Bruh.

?
I don’t tend to have many sprues these days but back when I was building more GW stuff I mainly used them for banner poles, terrain bits (poles, ladders, etc), spear/weapon handles and other things like that. You can also cut thin chunks off to make bolt heads and other bits of detail.
On a related note I would like to introduce you to this cool new invention called a candle, helps avoid branding your thumb while holding the lighter on 🙂
it would also mean a flame permanently on aiming up into the camera, hence the lighter, I believe I even mention it in the video
Did you get the same book on modelling techniques out the library van I did as a youth? Was quickly banned from making aerials after a few (minor) melted bits of bedroom carpet
I bought several of Shephard Paine’s books
Oh, a 10 minute GC… that’s seem long for sprues…
“this is going to be a short one” … is it though? XD
Being using this for bi-planes. Change the cross section before stretching and the new cross section will be retained. Heat a blade or similar and use the radiated heat to tighten the now string.
Great to see it in action. I’d heard of the technique for making antennae but always assumed it was complete fiddle and more hassle than I was likely to bother with, but you made it look simple. Next placcy kit I make, I will be keeping the sprues and giving this ago. I have been using dog grooming brush bristles for antennae hitherto, but they are a bit on the puny side for 28mm/1:50 scale, and also tend to detach easily because superglue. Nice one!
I just use Clapton vape wire now it’s like guitar strings but cheaper and comes on 5m+ rolls just remember wire guages are fractions of an inch bigger number thinner wire 32guage is usually good for most things 15mm – 28mm
Also keep in mind : if it burns then get the hell out of there … the fumes are toxic !
On that note however … the soot the burning plastic creates is great for making burned out buildings look realistic.
Just do that bit outside, because these are very toxic fumes.
that’s an interesting set of uses for old sprues was that the section between the hab-zone an the power section of B5? Gerry.
maaaaybe
Neat, thanks Gerry!
For my dodgy and aging eyes, this is one of the best hobby tools I’ve ever bought;

Now how about using the stretched sprue for the rigging on some tiny fighting boats?
not in this lifetime…bloody rigging
Lol

as or player its tons of use but I did interesting stuff for my daughter army, tree man and tree horder for her KoW nature forces, clear plastic is fantastic for icicles
I have a great idea for a Gerry Can, How to make trees using armatures and from Wire
Mel has already done that mate, on his watchamacallit…channel
lol
Actually maybe a video on how to make your own decals and transfers
With waterside paper and designs that don’t need white, tbh it’s generally more hassle than it’s worth unless you have a specialist dye or wax printer… There are companies who will do small runs of decals
Thanks there @timchubb
You could use this technical to add rigging to ship models. Much easier than trying to use cotton thread.
still no, are you all ganging up on me now 😉
Why would we do that 😉
Use 42gauge wire it’s as thin as cotton but not cotton so much easier to work with
For aerials I just use the bristles from and old dust pan and brush set . You can get some quite fine ones
Sprues aka ork iron, no ork vehicle is complete without some sprue welding
This is brilliant!
