Noice!
Nice video. Budgie sand, here we come! Would have been nice to see you base a couple of minis using your freshly prepared mix, to get an idea of how the end product would look. As it is, I’ve got to mix some up myself and give it a go 😉

Didn’t get up into the loft to bring any down.
cheep bird sand sounds a great idea Gerry does that make you a qualified cage fighter getting the sand from the budgie then ?
Great stuff. I’ve even used some of the finest Sussex clay soil from my back garden and added that to a mix. Just make sure you bake it in the oven first to get rid of any greeblies that might be in it.
100 degrees for 30 mins should do the trick
Thanks, this came just at the right time. A trip to the pet store it is for me tomorrow!
Could you say if you have any recommendations for the flock, static grass and the blended turfs? If you don’t want to promote any particular brands, can you confirm that they are dedicated materials produced for modellers? Or is there a cheaper way to get that stuff? (And if you’re happy recommending brands, please say!)
my static grass is Woodlands scenics Medium Green Static Grass Flock, but any of them will do the job. All of my flock is Javis Premier flock there are two ranges of flock, the standard is coarse so make sure you search for Premier. If you’re only buying one get MID GREEN FINE TURF JAVIS PREMIER. My big tub is 3 bags of MID GREEN FINE TURF JAVIS PREMIER 1 bag of LIGHT GREEN FINE TURF JAVIS PREMIER and 1 bag of DARK GREEN FINE TURF JAVIS PREMIER then I keep a bag of dark and light separate so I… Read more »
Thanks @avernos that’s great. I picked up some cat litter and two kinds of bird sand yesterday (though I really would like something in between in size). Hopefully this will do for my current scenery project though.
Next up is flock for basing and rural scenery! Will have a look to see where I can find these bits and pieces.
Thanks again!
Gerry,
I’ve only used Woodland Scenics. How do they compare to Javis as far as color and texture? I looked at some pictures and it looks like it might be coarser than Woodland Scenics…would WS’s coarse turf be closer or maybe a mix?
it’s larger pieces but nowhere near as large as the coarse. I add the flock for colour more than texture so the finer blended turf from WS will work for it. Colour-wise javis and WS have pretty much the same colours in both of the ranges, as above I prefer a mix of medium, light, and dark green but that’s me being me and not necessary.
This makes me want to stir my fingers in a big tub of homemade basing mix. … Is that odd? ?
pretty sure that’s what I was going for
That looks like real ground in a box.
Brilliant video, can’t wait to go to the pet shop now!
