4Ground: Fabled Realms – State Of The Beta
February 23, 2018 by dignity
Andy and Cad from 4Ground give us the latest and greatest updates from the Legends of Fabled Realms beta.
As the game transitions from Alpha to Beta, a number of changes to the game have been made. The guys talk us through why the changes needed to be made, what effect they had on the game, and how the new system will work.
Download The Rules!
Of course, as the weekend of beta testing goes on we'll be seeing how all of these changes have worked in-game too!
Download The Rules
Download The Beta Pack
The Beta Pack above gives you all of the cards and accessories you need to start playing the game with us this weekend.
What do you think of the new changes?

Will there be an alternative dice system for the colorblind?
The beta rules don’t have page numbers that I can see. That will make it more difficult to reference the rules when discussing them.
Having just looked at the rules, I agree!!! Can we have 1.1.1 version which simply adds page numbers and nothing else?? That seems something easy that can be done quickly.
They are now just regular D6. Depending on how you are colorblind you can simply choose other dice and just say — this is my “yellow” dice and everyone can just deal. I have a colorblind friend and I keep a hundred dice of various colors and he picks the set that best suites him. Then we just keep a piece of paper with one of those die on the paper for everyone else. Seems to work.
The problem is that the rule book does not have any symbols for the different dice levels, only way to know is to see the colours.
I will not say I read every page however, there are two things.
1) In the Beta Pack the pages I looked at actually call out “Yellow”, “Green”, “Blue” etc.
2) The Yellow dice always shows 6 pips, Green 5 pips, Blue 4 pips etc.
I will say, that on the pictures on the cards it is problematic and it would be good if they added Y, G, B, P and R in the small squares on the cards to make them more accessible.
I was taught to not just come with a problem but also propose a solution.
How would this work?

Perhaps the guys at 4Ground may consider something like this?
Any possible way we get 1 or 2 pages of PDF cards so that us at home can use any old miniatures we have to play a mini-mini scenario at how to get a bit of a flavor as to how this plays? My terrain will be my keyboard, mouse and glass of whiskey while I watch everyone else on BoW play for real. I have a few DnD and Dark Sword miniatures I could proxy.
Just a thought if possible. Just something to get a feel while rolling my own dice.
Exactly @turbocooler their is nothing stopping you using regular d6 and saying which colour your rolling. But @beetle does raise a good point, so my question is to 4ground, if you are reading this. Instead of having the colours on the stat card, why not have a capital letter of the colour type. For example a situational awareness test of 1 green dice would just have the letter G on it.
That way people who are colour blind not only know the dice but also the values it represents.
Great incite into 4grounda reasonig for the change. Makes perfect sense to me,I think some faction d6 with blank sides for the fails may work well for me as its one less thing to think about. I do think to start this will certainly pull more people in as we all know what a d6 is. Cant wait to get my first gane on!!
Where does the bulky come from on Kourusi and Allear because nothing in there equipment has it according the rule book? Or is this an oversight?
Its obviously good to release the beta since there has already been concerns raised. The question is if the designers will actually read the comments and take them into consideration!
Well that’s why there doing the weekend so they can get some testing which is usually from bits of the rules they want looked at From Beta testing I’ve done in the past it usually involves taking a section of rules and asking the players to feedback on that . Not sure why they would bother taking people’s comments here into account as we don’t know what part of the game they want testing nor are we playing the rules
Having played the game with the guys, I know that they want feedback from all of us whether we are there or not. All feedback helps.
Rob, they have stated in another interview (perhaps the 3D print one, or was it this one?) that they read comments for these posts, even if they don’t comment themselves.
It was this one where they made the comment. It maybe elsewhere as well.
Until a version with page numbers shown on the bottom is put online, just refer to the pages entry in the pdf. That´ll do for a while.
So I like in the new dice in that defence is the same in attack. That criticals can be countered by enough successes. However I don’t think the colour is intuitive. As Justin was laying them out I was thinking how am I going to remember the order. I think I’d want dice that have blank sides for misses and a special symbol for criticals – but that’s taking you back to custom dice. Or you could use different dice but where the number required is always the same. Say D6, D8, D10, D20, where 5+ is always a hit… Read more »
The situation with the dice confuses me. Having to remember what number is required for hits and crits on 5 different colours of dice seems too complex a system and so custom dice seem like a better solution. Five different colours is fine as long as you have each one with the relevant number of blanks, hit symbols and critical symbols rather than regular pipped dice.
The dice rules sound good to make gaming easier.
The dice mechanic seems nice sand easy to remember. Looking forward to playing this with the missus over the weekend.
Does anyone know what page number (vie the PDF) has the racial stats? I have scoured them for a few hours now and I cannot figure out there they are. Thank
Increasing wounds and the ability to cause wounds does make the game a bit more rewarding compared to rounds of comabt where everything bounces off. A good change.
Throughout the beta weekend, I was wondering what happened to the dice. Thank you for clearing that up. Why stick with the color dice approach at all though? Why not simply list the result needed? I.E. 3+
Swapping to normal dice is great, easily replaced if they go under the fridge
Hi All,
We do read all the comments (for the beta weekend all 2000+ :)). We are going to produce some custom dice that will be available as an option.
Here is a link to our dropbox file for the beta with access to all the current files. We will be updating these to take into account the ongoing changes.
