The DreadBall Kickstarter from Mantic Games is Live!
August 24, 2012 by brennon
If you're a fan of sports games with a twist then DreadBall might be the game for you! Mantic Games have already teased this game not only at Gen Con but across the web and now the counter has no hit zero. It's time to pledge...
Above you can see what comes in the basic set, but of course with Kickstarter the extras are close behind. You're already getting a great deal but what about adding in...
...to make your DreadBall experience all the better? Of course the best team is going to be the Forge Fathers but I suppose the other factions should get a look in too.
I have had the pleasure of playing this game and I can testify to it being a hell of a lot of fun! Mantic have ALREADY smashed their pledge target and the cash is still pouring in. Get over there and start pledging for what is a fantastic game.
Next up at the $40,000 target is this awesome looking Ref. An all seeing, all knowing robot!
Are you looking forwards to hitting the pitch with DreadBall?

Yes, thank you mantic! it reminds me of my youth and those cheesy sci fi movies (robot jox, arena etc) and of speed/roller ball. I want it, ive backed it, I want it to do well.
‘Trontek – we’re better than you, and we know it!’
So this is confusing to me, lot of people hate Games Workshop but really love Mantic games, but from 90% of the pictures I have seen from them it just seems to be copying GW stuff, like their future game thing is 40k and this seems very much copying blood bowl. It’s just that don’t often get guys cheering for the guys doing the copying, feels like x company makes this product and some Chinese company makes a cheap knock off and everyone praises that, hate gw’s prices but this is just getting weird to me.
Warpath & Kings of War have a very different system of play compared to the GW line and their factions, while similar to others have a lot of differences which make them unique. In terms of DreadBall it’s futuristic for one, which takes it away from BloodBowl and it also plays nothing like it either. I was lucky enough to play this a while back and it was a very different, fast paced and original take on a tabletop sports game. The teams all feel very different and the concepts behind scoring and such are fun too. Don’t write it… Read more »
Quick question Ben. Can you tell me whether this game features the same level of brutality that we find in Bloodbowl?
Yep plenty of beating people up and slamming them into the ground. It obviously depends on the side you’re playing but teams like Marauders and Forge Fathers love a burly brawl.

And I was lucky enough to be one of the play testers who kicked Brennon’s butt!!! 😛 Sorry about that matey. We even shared a taxi ride from Derby train station… stoopid rail network. Any who he’s sot on. Dreadball is bound to have lazy comparisons made with Blood Bowl, it’s inevitable and I’m sure Mantic are expecting it. However, I don’t see any similarities between the two and Ive play tested the game more extensively than most. Honestly I’m impressed with what Jake has developed and there’s way more to come and way more to be shown. I’m really… Read more »
Very impressive hope the rules are well done unlike there other two systems the minis are pretty sweet as well
FYI guys. If you’re thinking of funding this, REALLY consider going for the “Striker” level. On the kickstarter comments, Ronnie has pretty much said that this is the “sweet-spot” for receiving inducements. Looking things over, it seems like the best value overall. Depending on how far the inducements go….looks like you’ll be able to get EVERYTHING for 150$
Even though I normally hate the look of Mantic stuff. ( I find the sculpting and general design more than a bit lacking. ) I really quite like the look of this.
I can’t help but wonder if they’ve thought it through though…
Red Box games Kickstarter has just finished.
People are still on the come down from finalising the Sedition Wars pledge manager.
Relic Knights is still ongoing.
And…
Bones has been obscenely successful and sucked up a redunculous amount of money.
I can’t help but think that people arn’t going to have the money for this as well.
The main target was already smashed so that’s at least funded. I reckon with the month and a bit they have given for this they will crack their other stretch goals.
It does raise the question of course as to whether or not we are seeing maybe too many Kickstarters these days?
But…for now it’s still working.
BoW Ben
Oh don’t get me wrong. I really hope they do well and I’m happy that they have already reached their goal.
It’s just with everything else going on at the moment Kickstarter wise. I can’t help but think that it won’t reach it’s full potential.
I’m equally skeptical about Kickstarters @tasker I’m usually underwhelmed whenever I see a new one. The process, however, seems like it’s starting to mature beyond the “give us money for development” state. Think of it this way. For a project like Dreadball, you’re essentially paying to pre-order the game. You kick in a few extra bucks and get a whole lot of value for your money. The more people jump on board, the more stuff you get. To me, it doesn’t feel much different from pre-ordering a deluxe edition of a video game…except in this case, you may be getting… Read more »
Dreadball + Augmented Reality = EYES CRUSHER!!!
I am sure the game play is great, as more of a painter than a dice roller I don’t really find mantics models to have much originality. Whilst some of the forgefahers I can enjoy, everything else seems a bit too close to what GW is doing or has done. To me. I think this is where I enjoy warmahordes, infinity and dark age models more, they seem to be sculpted without “borrowing” from other companies. I appreciate that mantic have put in time and effort to produce their models, I just don’t see much originality.
Agreed, and you put it very politely. I can empathise with it being more affordable and potentially better rules, but the lack of originality in models and ideas puts me off. I think they should go ahead with ideas like the fishmen, which people were interested in, and which would provide something more appealing because its different. For me they just blatantly rip off too much.
FWIW
GW isn’t always very original either stealing ideas from…Alien, Starship troopers, Michael Moorcock, ww1, ww2 plus Fantasy and Sci Fi in general.
Of course we the public tend to like our orcs, elves and dwarves to look a certain way so most minis follow that perception. I dont see Mantic as ripping off GW I see both of them ripping off ideas from books , films and myth…and I dont have a problem with that
Wow, with Dark Vengeance, Open Fire, Bolt Action and now this, has there ever been a been a better time to like games/plastic soldiers?! Awesome Mantic, well done!
seriously? Mantic doing Blood Bowl now? >>
Well is anyone else doing Blood Bowl? Oh yeah I forgot ,GW plc developed a range of great games then let them languish in limbo without any support. While they focused on ‘selling toy soldiers to children.’ Then jumped on all the fan support for the games left in limbo. Now years later when the talented staff that left GW plc behind because they want to ACTUALY devlop games for gamers. Start to develop better rule sets and use ‘genre familiar ‘ settings , all the GW plc ‘fan boys’ assume any game that looks anything slightly simiular to a game… Read more »
Mantic have discussed some of the game mechanics in their latest update. Game will be a pretty big departure from BloodBowl. True to Mantic’s form, this game will be fast….and a lot less clunky than BB.
Ill be glad if its not the same as Blood Bowl as Ive not been a big fan of those rules- the biggest shame to me is that GW has awesome specialist games but cancels them after to brief a while and instead keeps my least liked 2 games going.
I cheer Mantic on, they seem to be trying to return us to what GW used to be about
It’s really not like Blood Bowl at all. The fact that the game doesn’t reset when you score ensures that. That mechanic alone requires you to have a completely different mindset when approaching a game, and since you’re not picking all the bits up and shuffling them every few turns makes the flow of the game feel very different.
Choice is always a great thing, and it’s great to see other companies filling gaps where GW seem to be lacking (to some). Competition in any given market is nothing but great for the consumers like you and me, especially at the moment when finances are tight for most. It forces established companies like GW to work harder to keep their market share. I don’t consider my self a GW “fanboi” but I do think they produce the nicest models. I only buy their models. As for mantics models, I personally feel most of them are really quite lacking in… Read more »
Oh and I should reiterate, I am more a painter than a player, so for all I know Mantic could easily have the edge on rules and game play, I will leave that to you guys who know better than I.
I like how its a mash up of GW bloodbowl and Infinity futuristic styling.
With all the neon hex grids it looks like something beamed live from a nomad stadium.
Definately a better idea than a medieval fanatasy game like BB or grimdark 40k aesthetic, the Infinity look is very ‘in’ these days.
Actually a more Infinity inspired version of BB would have been preferable to me, but yes, it’s not a bad looking game overall. Still think I prefer BB to this incarnation of the theme however.
