I have to say I am really enjoying these interviews. So who have you got lined up for the next one?
Always look forward to watching one of the little chats with a Designer
Hearing Alessio’s competitive nature, reminds of of Dice Tower’s top 10 board games that you should not play with angry gamers (youtube) … Warhammer was mentioned as an aside .. it was done in great humor.
BTW, thanks again for another great Designers studio.
This is a superb series, you are an excellent interviewer, Warren. Alessio is always interesting and I was particularly fascinated by his crisp commercial approach to the ‘business’ of game design. After watching this, I am not suprised that he employs Rick Priestley, and not vice versa, although I realise that’s an occasional thing. Makes me wonder though, whether if he was involved in Gates of Antares, it might have been a commercial/kickstater success.
oh…. PS, GW are the most non-innovative company there is Warren – to disagree with you totally. Producing wispy plastic kits and reborn zoids in the 457th revamp of Warhammer/40k hardly counts as fresh and original. I used to really look forward to the side (‘specialist’) games they produced and I own MoW, Battlefleet Gothic, Space Hulk (the orifinal one)Gorkamorka, EPic, Blood Bowl and last but NOT least…… Trolls in da Pantry (you want games for your little girl, that little series GW made were superb). What do we get now…. Dreadfleet …… bleugh
Interesting chat. I really like the Designer’s Studio serie. Looking forward to the next one.
First I would like to question Warzan comments on GW, I have said it a lot recently but it is not GW bashing, GW does not make innovations, does not challenge the industry to go forward, they recite the same old things, innovation, improvement and challenge comes from the small companies that have the drive to do so. Now on the actual interview, I find Alesio the most influential game developer for me, I share a few ideas, his reasoning has put me in a path shaped by him, like the river following the path a glacier has carved in… Read more »
That hour zipped by.
Got to say I agree with Alessio regarding simple rules. Not just because it’s one of my life mantras “Simple works best” but also because of sheer amount of games that I want to get involved in.
That was a bit of a thought provoking ending. How could a manufacturer/designer embrace 3d printers. How long before we are downloading space marines designs.
@warzan I did enjoy your chess story
Excellent interview – love this series and this is one of the best so far 🙂
Definitely agree – 3D Printing will be a big catalyst for change in the industry (and a few others no doubt) when it gets wide spread and commonly affordable… the industry will certainly continue but I think we’ll see companies changing their focus and business models, and quite likely even more independents making an impact on the market 🙂
Great job to the both of you. I like hearing from professionals that are passionate about their industry, it gives me insight on things to focus on in my own line of work. Keep it up, and can’t wait for my Loka set to come in the mail from the Kickstarter backing 🙂
I’m new to Backstage, so sorry for the late comment. This was a really interesting interview, and I very much enjoyed hearing Alessio’s perspective. Certainly makes me look forward to Loka even more. Also, I’m always interested in how the business side works in relation to the creative. Seeing as he’s both now give him some unique insights.
A bit behind but…I love Alessios game designs. I believe he has blendid mans best friend in gameing, chess, with wargameing in such a beautiful way. Possibly Loka will be around for a long long time.
