Dead Earth Games’ Next Project Revealed: The Shattered Crown
April 22, 2015 by brennon
Dead Earth Games created their first game last year with Across The Dead Earth which was a Post-Apocalyptic gang-based skirmish game where you created a crew and then leveled them up in the wasteland. Their new project has now been revealed in The Shattered Crown which takes a different path...
The World Of The Shattered Crown
The background for The Shattered Crown is inspired by the conflicts and intrigue of Britain between the 13th and 16th Century as well as the magic, mystery and adventure of the Arthurian period too. Effectively they've hoped to create a way for you to make 'historical' feeling armies without the restrictions of real history...
The hope is that you will be able to create your own heroes, lords, ladies and more for this fantasy world and then take armies that range from a handful of men all the way up to a grand battalions. Twin this with the use of the progression system from Across The Dead Earth and you also have the benefit of campaign play where armies grow and become personalised over time. You'll hopefully craft a story worthy of the ages.
The Shattered Crown is going to use a unique activation system, utilising cards and bluffing, plus the extensive spell book to give you more options on the battlefield and with that a wide range of tactics to employ against your enemy.
Fantastic Art
As you might have noticed above there is some very nice artwork already completed for The Shattered Crown which shows a world which takes cultural notes from a range of different time periods...
This mix of the Mid-Medieval and Dark Age styles has created a very interesting art style that comes from Filip Dudek. It's going to be interesting seeing how this all translates into miniatures and thankfully we even have a few renders showing off this stage below...
Artwork To Miniature
Another name working on the project is Russ Charles and friends who worked on the sculpts for Guild Ball (which I think we'll all agree are pretty special!). Below you can see some of the current 3D renders...
Above we have the Khra Hero Azael (the artwork for him is above) and a unit of Hellesburne Infantry with an assortment of weapons. As you can see this stylistic clash is apparent here with the Celtic look of Azael alongside the more traditionally Medieval looking Hellesburne Infantry.
Kickstarter Coming Soon
The focus of the upcoming Kickstarter is to fund the main factions of the game, the Hellesburne and Khra and of course the rules to go along with them. There has been a shift it seems towards games where the focus is on you making it into what you as a wargamer want it to become with the likes of Open Combat as a popular case and point.
With that in mind I could see this being an interesting proposition for wargamers and if this sounds like a good idea to you head on over to their Facebook Group where you can download the Alpha Rules and more. Testing always helps!
Any game promising War Bears deserves a second look right?

This looks interesting for sure. Always happy to have more massed battles. While War Bears is an awesome concept I feel as if its already been done by a few other companies. Still, never can have enough bears.
HI and thanks for your interest! We did toy with other animals but there was only really bears and wolves which fit this faction aesthetically and stylistically. Also the game world is based loosely on what we imagine the British isles and Western Europe to have been like in the 13th-16th Century, so certain animals just didn’t fit. Once our artist saw mention of bears there was no stopping him from making sure the Alpha group got behind them! And I’m glad they did because I’ve every confidence the renders/miniatures will be as awesome as the art!
Bears! Charging down the ravine,
Eyes glowing bright as they tear out your spleen.
Over the mountains they fly with a roar
Wherever they go, the bears just leave gore!
Bears! Standing tall in the woods,
They’ll bite off your face if you’re up to no good.
Claws leaving scars, giant teeth tearing skin,
Fur on the outside and darkness within!
got plenty of experience with war beers, never tried bears. Maybe I should ?
You should. There’s nothing quite like riding on the back of a mighty beer and hear the lamentations of the women as it rolls over, and crushes, the enemy beneath it’s impregnable aluminium shell.
These bears go to war drunk, as their riders do. So best of both, really!
Yay, bear cavalry! )))
Seriously though, I like the “gritty fantasy”. Looks somewhat similar to Myth, the Fallen Lords…
Yay!
And great! Join us in the beta and stay informed!
Wow, some 3D sculpts that look like they would actually translate well into a physical miniature,
I especially like that all the faces look ethnically homogenous.
The masters look great, we’ll be sure send Brennon pics when we have metals, hopefully within the next couple of weeks.
There’s some poorly shot photographs on the FB Beta Group. Join us. JOIIIINNN USSSSS!
Bears Bears Bears Bears Bears Bears Bears Bears Bears Bears Bears… I’m excited about the Hero model very Celtic…. Bears Bears Bears Bears Bears Bears Bears.
