I’m writing this as I start watching but here’s my tournament view. I play mostly wargames with a small group that very few people play or aren’t really suitable for tournaments. Baroque, Altar of Freedom, Sharp Practice, Chain of Command, Impetvs, ect. But I also have armies for the more popular games and know roughly how to play them just so that I can attend local events and play games with new people. Old World, Bolt Action, Flames of War, Horus Heresy and in the past 40K but that game left me and my kind behind a long time ago.… Read more »
I really need to do more MESBG tournaments. I thought I’d do some this year but it just hasn’t panned out. Maybe something for 2025!
Tournaments have pros and cons. The Pros are that you get some fantastic concentrated hobby porn to look at. It can be amasingly inspirational and you can talk hobby with like minded nerds for days on end. It’s great for ideas and the visual of a big group of people playing ‘your game’ makes you feel like part of a bigger community. As you prepare for the tournament it can help motivate you to build and paint your toy soldiers, and for newer players, you can learn tricks and tactics that you were previously unaware of. The Cons are that… Read more »
Very true, it can be a doubled-edged sword. I think recently there have been more tournaments falling on the pros side of things now though which is good to hear!
I’d go to an OTT tournament but only if someone did the army lists for me
the BoW bootcamps were kind of like that … 😉
first day : build your army
second day: play games
I know someone who has been going to tournaments recently and just has the armies done up for him. It just means they can dive in haha
I’d love to try playing in a tournament, but I’d also would have to be comfortable with the rules and have an army to actually sign up for one. The two BoW bootcamps I’ve been to were a lot of fun, but also high stress for me. I can only imagine the kind of stress an actual tournament would be for me 🙁 I also have to say that the terrain used at both BoW bootcamps has spoiled me, because when I see images of tournaments and the players are on a green matt with barely any terrain I’m kind… Read more »
I do think there’s an issue with finding tournaments, especially tournaments that are “good”. When I was doing some tournaments, it was normally through my local store knowing what was going on and being part of community groups.
@brennon For the red spray have you tried Halfords as that colour your looking for reminds me of 1970’s Ford Capri’s
I have not tried Halfords – I will have a look!
Was that 6mm ACW thing this weekend?….I knew there was something I was going to do
Back in the day I used Workshops GT’s in Nottingham as the impetus for getting armies built & completed. Never went for lists that were particularly optimised for tourney play, but always tried for something wither fluffy, fun, or that had a lot of kitbashing work gone into it, sometimes all three. And honestly? whilst i might have gotten my **** pushed in – especially in early games – later in the event on the lower tables it was always a laugh. Example – in one game vs CSM my Raptors had a bit of stalemate, but in one table… Read more »
Happy Sunday COGz an OTTers 👍👍
We stopped playing certain fantasy tournaments because although most players were great, there were quite a few total arseholes who spoilt the experience
@brennon I think the B&B tournament was the Phoenix Gaming one in Rushden, Northamptonshire that I ran. Glad you enjoyed them, and would you be interested in attending if I did another next year?
Ah yes that’s the one – yes I would love to dive into another one of those!
@brennon
Excellent I might even consider a doubles event as a change with a small warband per player
Keep me in the loop. I know my pal would be interested as well when the time comes so a doubles would be great!
Poles that wern’t plumbers is that possible in Britain ?🤔
Love playing game’s over the Xmas period is great until you kill on of the commanders then all the book’s come out an it becomes a debate over rules😲🤦😃🙉🤷
Diddy didn’t turn up did he @avernos ?🤔😲🙉
Your Chaplin looks like he has a beard Ben.👍
I consider myself fortunate enough to have enough gaming friends that tournaments have kittle to offer me other than a real try gard gaming experience that frankly I’m a bit too old for.
P.S. @brennon Havi g just upgraded my compressor I’m happy to ship my old starter one for gratis if you want to dip a toe in. I can send a spare airline too, you just need an entry level airbrush off amazon or wherever.
Fantastic show guy’s 👍
HAPPY SUNDAY!!
Wait its Sunday?
Happy Sunday.
I’ve never played in any tournaments but the idea of going to one and not taking it too seriously could be fun, especially a COG MAW-Moonstone tournament.
On the one hand is the good that tournaments bring to a game – an engaged, enthusiastic and interested player base and social connection.
On the other hand is the bad (and this depends on the company and game system TBH) – constant rebalancing and rules fiddling to maintain tournament balance that renders physical product obsolete (the most egregious being one month after release) and fractures groups based on which rules/tweak version they happen to play (especially league/club play).
The former is laudable. The latter drives me freakin insane – and has been a major reason why I have abandoned some systems.
Yeah – I often think that some game companies forget that their games are meant to be fun haha and imbalance is part of that!
Sunday.
On the topic of tournaments:
* I avoid them if the player base is meta-gaming and it’s highly competitive
* I join if gaming with a fluff list is still fun even in a competitive scenario.
* I really enjoy when it’s all fluff (which rarely happens)
Also: don’t break the @avernos he’s needed for things!
@brennon I do get your vibes on old school minis. Some Orcs and Space Marines are calling from deep within the closet. But I can’t let them out. Can I? It’ll be madness and Terrain Fest is around the corner! ALL THE TERRAIN!
Maybe we need to get more fluffy tournaments out there! Maybe mix that oldhammer goodness into some of the terrain?
I’ve only played Dreadball tournaments, so I’ve definitely seen the better side of it. I think I’ve had 12 competitive games, some right hidings (pre-nerfing Judwan I’m looking at you, though that opponent was apologetic at least). I’ve met one player with douche tactics but it’s overwhelmingly been tremendous fun. My funnest game was against a Mantic staffer and his drunken monkey winner will stay with me forever.
I doubt I’d enjoy a full on pissing contest tournament, it’s just not my idea of fun. If it’s yours, that’s ok we don’t have to like the same things.
Lovely looking vikings @nightrunner I can’t wait to see the project finished.
@tinyheadbones thanks for the kind words. I wasn’t expecting a golden button, since the project is not ready yet. Thanks OTT, you guys are the best.
I think tournaments are a great way of adding yearly achievements and a challenge for your army.
The theatre/ campaign games are great in their own way.
Having a challenge to focus your army around is always great.
HAPPY SUNDAY…..brilliant show once again lads.
KoW turnament !!! yes please!!
@avernos the snaky creature is a giant leach from Reaper Miniatures that I will be using for my next side-project.
Thanks for the Golden Button. I wasn’t expecting it. Kudos OTT team.
