first, the sunday starts now
Happy Sunday!
The topic of this week has a flawed premise, because the question is not whether companies would be willing to take a risk (I’m pretty sure most developers would), but if the IP-owners are. The IP-owners call the shots at the end of the day and have to aprove everything, and most would be (understandably) hesitant to approve new stuff, because this would create a huge amount of ambiguity within the IP in question, especially in IPs which are still actively developed by the owner.
We do talk about that at one point I believe. I may be mis-remembering heh
Wow I was on the toilet
Happy Sunday! Cracking show all, see you next week.
Is a croak in your hole like having a frog in your throat?
@fcostin Didn’t TMNT start off as dark and gritty? And what did you think of the TMNT/Batman crossover cartoon?
They are did! The mirage comics were incredibly dark. Then we travelled through the 80s and 90s where things like Vanilla Ice exist!
Is ‘did’ some slang the kids of today use?
I was introduced to the turtles in the TMNT RPG from the 80s, when the shitty cartoon was released it was such a disappointment. The original was so much darker glad to hear they returned to the darker feel in the RPG Raphael was an anarchist. The best villain was Doc Feral
Whelp, that helped get me through the first couple of hours of my 12 hour shift ? And @avernos greatly underestimates the obsessive nature of gamers – I still don’t have a 3d printer, but have filled several hundred gigs of my computer hard drive with brought & free STLs. Just off the top of my head I have regiments of Battlemechs, armies of Imperial Guard (including some excellent multi-part Tanith), loads of Astartes parts, and plenty of Mand’oa, all waiting to be printed. One day…. And the point about franchises being kept going outside their format of origin is… Read more »
I’ve got the Kickstarter deluxe (works) edition of the first TMNT game and the thing that’s kept the thing gathering dust ever since is that IDW effed up all the scales on the miniatures. Very frustrating when you only bought it for the miniatures!
It’s also why I didn’t back City Fall but I totally agree with Free – that was an epic arc in the comics. I’ll be interested to know if the City Fall minis scale with the original turtle models. If so it might have some value!
An the asylum happy hour begins.
Eldar covered in human skin that would make them dark eldar? Ben
That’s because kid’s hate change an Chuck it when they leave the shop Gerry.
The turtles were to good at their jobs that why they moonlight as plumbers? now.
Happy, happy Sunday lovely people!
Subcontract Justin to do some of the 3D printing John.
Happy Sunday. I backed the Kickstarter for the Dark Souls board game. We played quite a few games but it just didn’t work very well. The upgrade mechanics were poor, the treasure deck was far too big and many items in that deck either required a very specific (and expensive) upgrade path for the character, or just wasn’t relevant that it became very frustrating. Lastly as mentioned in the show the grinding required became tedious very fast as the exploration part of the game just wasn’t all that fun. I eventually sold the whole lot (I went all in) and… Read more »
I worked for a while in the toy industry, inventing weird and wonderful gadgets; while it introduced myself and my mate into making toys (not so much games) and he thought it was the coolest job ever, I hated almost every second of it. It was all about IP. Lazy, unimaginative IP. We’d take our designs to a pitch and would be up against a lunchbox with a Dr Who sticker on it. And as much as the likes of Mattel and Ravensburger said they loved our designs, if we couldn’t get the cost of production down to 20p a… Read more »
I may be comparing apples to oranges, but I remember the IP-led kid’s boardgames, being uniformly terrible, while the hobby IP games are much better, though not necessarily better than other hobby games. IMO, The problem isn’t the supplier. It’s the consumer. I’m sure there’re psychological explanations why an IP will influence someone’s decision, perhaps for the same reason a non-IP theme is attractive. I do know that tangible products are more likely to sell than non-tangible ones, which is perhaps why many Saturday morning cartoons, like He-Man, were designed to sell toys. As for sales… well, that’s how you… Read more »
Nice show congrats to the fab button winners.
Happy Sunday all. Great golden buttons but that moonstone work is fantastic. I don’t feel I know enough about the IP issue to comment. I will admit I do let out a sigh every time I see a reskinned monopoly set and I wonder how many sets are actually sold. I suppose the nostalgia surrounding many IP centred games are a draw to gamers and collectors but while, like the recent warriors game, might appeal to me I’m lucky I guess not impulsive in my purchasing.
Happy Sunday! Nice golden buttons.
Should The Tabletop Industry Be Taking More Risks? Yes but No. Of course it would be nice to see more different things but then again we also want companies to succeed and most “new” ideas just die before they get any exposure. May put it this way: Should big companies take more risks: yes, they usually can leverage the odd system not working and also have a high media presence. Smaller companies should stick to “tried and tested” things to just get their feet of the ground.
And now back to Skyrim 😉
Real shame people bash the Dark Souls tabletop game, we really enjoy and have taken on many bosses within it. It can be a tough game but nowhere near the level of the video game. I think for a dungeon delver you can pick up and play very quickly it is a good game.
Is it just me but wouldnt a TMNT and LOTR crossover be amazing…
TAKE ALL MY MONEY
Frodo,Sam,Pippin and Merry as Terrapins?
Works for me!
Happy Sunday,
didnt get 1st was working on a thing and yes that thing is “the greatest movie ever made”
Not a fan of TMNT, so enough said.
I could get into Battletech, as I play Titanicus. So it’s something I may look into.
Not played Gorkamorka in a long time, and from what I can remember my Orks couldn’t hit a barndoor if they where standing on it. Those muties look amazing, I do love mini conversions.
Must of been asleep, ill have to look into this Moonstone.
Well done to the golden Button winners, very well deserved.
Happy Sunday…
bit of a mad busy weekend – just gotten around to XLBS the now. Thank you so much for the golden button on me Moonstone and a huge huge thank you for the really kind words in the show. really appreciated 🙂
