It’s the XLBS Show……,.Happy Sunday Fellow CoGs! . . . . If I only bought miniatures at an Event then I would have NO miniatures! I have yet to make it to any event of the size or prestige that has been suggested. As far as just purchasing on my birthday, that would never do. I love discovering new games or finally getting into games that I have skipped on in the past. Also, I think that game companies would NOT be in favor of this tactic. We would see many companies go under if this buying once a year… Read more »
Forgot to say, I do own ‘Altar of Freedom’. Really enjoy it.
I’m going to try and use it this summer in the backyard with large tables and ‘Warlord Games’ American Civil War minis. (12 or 15 mill depending on who you read as to what scale it really is)
Happy Sunday to one and all.
Polemos is usually 2 rulesets in one. A regimental level (60×30 bases) and brigade level(60×60 bases) . You could look at Fire and Fury if there still available but I stand by my first recommendations. An interesting idea woukd be using 2mm terrain with 6mm figures
John and Shay For inspiration just watch the Gettysburg film and the Ken Burns ACW series
Was trying to find where I had watched the Ken Burns series, but I think it was Netflix when they had it. Seems to be on a PBS add on channel for Amazon in the UK now.
They may not have dated well, but I recall two TV series from the 80s; Blue and Grey (mini series) & North and South (multi-season). That may get the juices flowing and are bound to be streaming somewhere…
Nope – seems they’re not currently streaming anywhere… UK anyway.
You don’t speak Russian.?

Hi XLBS God’s ?
Ooh American civil war I bet @Oriskany Jim will have some great suggestions for you all if your stumped Guy’s.
After trying the limit of not buying for 6 months last year until this month I can say the tarnish of the shiny is a real effect. The downside is that I’ve watched sales come and go with great discounts as well as a couple of companies stop doing business. The upside has been the real freedom to get things done instead of continuously digging myself into poverty and burying under thicker layers of figures. I did allow for the buying of hobby material otherwise but it was less than minis as I generally don’t go out much on terrain/board… Read more »
Those 6mm civil war figures are the ones I gave to Lloyd to prove that 6mm are cool, they are Baccus figures ? I have a shed load of 6mm ACW figures as they are the best 6mm figures imho whilst I like Baccus figures I could never get on with their rules. There are loads of different ACW rules out there. My favourite rules I last played was bloody big battles.
I think I speak for all of us when I say “Wtf John”
I don’t know what you mean… 🙂
Lovely bot bots Gerry, cant wait to see those battle reports and your effort for the bot war painting challenge in February.
The problem i have is quite simply FOMO. Too many missed opportunities in the past to get something at the right time has scarred me so i have to grab those elusive promo models and limited releases as soon as theyre announced or it really gets into my head. Good topic though and good discussions.
cheers, just looking at priming them this week.
A Great show guy’s.
Ooh! A Golden Button!!!
For John there was a history channel Civil War series which did dramatisation of 6 battles of the ACW, starting with Bullrun and ending with Siege of Petersberg.
Definitely give you a Band of Brothers feel, can’t remember what series was called.
Happy Sunday.
I think as well as Christmas and birthdays you may have to include kickstarter all in pledges.
Must admit the idea seems appealing in an idyllic sort of way but I don’t think I’d want to do it myself. I like the freedom to say “what the hell” and just buy stuff.
Had a competition with my brother last year of painted versus bought/received. I only bought 4 wolves, but did receive a load of miniatures from my brother for my birthday and Christmas.
I found that as my Forge Father army project last year went on the less productive I got. I should have had other small projects to do when I started to procrastinate.
Happy Sunday….well now buying or being bought once or twice a year i would say yes for me personally but mainly due to my work which is 12 hr shift work and family commitments so sometimes i don’t get near my hobby, but i would be a bulk buyer me personally so any project i start i buy it all for the army i want or game but i do follow the Nigel Stillman rules so that makes it easier and more cost effective but i do like looking for different rules that the army can be used in.
Happy Sunday. I have slept in, had a nice long breakfast and took a long, hot shower. Now I have a nice cup of coffee and will watch some XLBS. Let’s get it on! 00:30 What the flock?! oO 01:00 Hobby time! 02:30 “Gerry helping…” oh oh. Say goodbye to your wallet then XD 03:50 Shay going all in full grognard! Nice! 08:35 TWENTY?! I have T-Shirts older than that! XD 16:15 Haven’t gotten any award yet! Still in the post? Shay? John? Justin? 18:30 It is amazing… and sadly a bit to pricey for my budget :S 20:30 two… Read more »
@johnlyons watch Ken Burns documentary The Civil War. He gets actors to read the diaries and letters of soldiers while showing contemporary photos. Also watch the movie Glory. Surprisingly accurate for a Hollywood movie.
Is the Ken Burns documentary the one I’m thinking of that’s under the ABC network? (is it ABC?….)
I don’t think so. It was a PBS documentary.
The other movie to watch is Gettysburg. Originally a two part made for TV series, it had limited a theatrical release. It starred Martin Sheen as General Robert E. Lee, Tom Berenger as Longstreet and Jeff Daniel’s as Colonel Joshua Chamberlin, commander of the 20th Maine Infantry Regiment.
The movie was based on the novel The Killer Angels by Michael Sharra. A later movie, Gods and Generals, had the same cast but covered the earlier Fredericksburg campaign.
Also Richard Jordan as Gen, ‘Lo’thario Amistead and sadly his last film, I always founf him a very watchable actor although he mostly played support charcaters or the villain. If you Watch gods and generals first and it was mostly the Union side with Chamberlain brothers had the same cast, then Gettysberg. I think Ben was thinking of the film Cold Mountain with a bomb placed under confederate trenchs but when it was set off the union following attack sent troops who hadn’t trained for the assault so instead of running around the lip of the crater went straight ahead… Read more »
Yeah, that scene showed the Battle of the Crater during the siege of Petersburg.
Not sure if the link will work but here is the link to PBS. You can watch a few free links to see if it’s your cup of tea and you can of course buy it in multiple formats.
Link doohickey: https://www.pbs.org/kenburns/the-civil-war/
I think Brigade Fire and Fury is a wonderful game and gives the right feel for the period and it is simple to play.
Little War have done a review on it https://youtu.be/b3jIYDz-tJw
Yup that is another good rules set. ??
Thanks for the birthday shoutout @avernos ! I was just starting to think about my comment when that came up, so I guess I have to comment now! Interestingly, whilst I don’t think I could do the once/twice a year purchase thing due to things like Star Wars Legion pre-orders being the only way you’ll get anything within a century, I do think the tantric approach to spending is a good thing! Because Christmas and my Birthday come quite close together, I do tend to stop buying things for myself around October/November time and when I fancy something, I’ll pop… Read more »
I’ve not pushed my buying to a number of times a year, but I have restricted it to projects I’m doing this year only. For most that means only one or two items because I already have the bulk of minis for those whilst others I need to?actually buy minis for them.
Happy Sunday to all,
Please have a great day and watch the greatest movie ever made.
Polemos is interesting if it follows the other era Polemos sets. You dont set an army list – you say i want an army of 20 bases, and then roll up your army, its quality etc etc so you need a way to identify that. Basing is “based” on inf and cav are based on a ratio of 2:1, so 20:10mm, 60:30mm etc so would fit in with Alter of freedom if you were going “as written”. For my ECW that stalled years ago I was going to go 40:20 and asked Peter at Baccus if he could alter the… Read more »
probably best to stick with altar then from what Shay has been saying he’s wanting to refight the battles rather than play randomised or list built games. It does sound interesting I may look over the rules when he gets them for something else
I have the early editions of ecw, napoleonics, Spanish succession (I think or that might be my dads), and possibly the great northern war – none used in anger (or any other emotional state for that matter). They are all of a similar set up as you’d expect. For me they exemplified some of the issues in starting histories if you want a force you can just throw down – how to start. ECW highlights this best as qualities AND ratio of pike to shot were randomised and coming from WISIWIG with GDub the rational “just use postits and be… Read more »
Ooh tell a lie, I did use the naps one at Div level using sprayed spare bases and postits – was ok, parts weren’t especially clear so trying to enthuse a non grognard didn’t go well!
I used to spend lots of money at salute but it didn’t stop me getting things throughout the year. On the way home I’d take all the minis out of the packaging so the wife would think I’d spent less than I had. I won’t be going to salute this year as we are saving up for a holiday. Although partizan and hammerhead are two shows close to me and I spend just as much money at them as I did at salute so I can’t win.
Happy Sunday. Buying once a year. I would like to know, who could pull that off? I think “obtaining” new things every so often, keeps the juices flowing and supports the “business” of the hobby. I’m not opposed to splurge buying, but the tower of products over my shoulder would bother me, and the new products coming out that year, that I wouldn’t enjoy, would somehow give me a feeling of disconnect from my hobby.
Check out Ken Burns Civil war documentary series – we found it fascinating and inspiring (vis a vis ACW mini gaming).
