Is it really SUPER-detailed if you haven’t done nail heads?
Where Sam when you need* him?
Oh, well. Hey, Khrystan!
*as defined as-have a long, tedious task at hand.
I’m gonna do those with a pencil 🙂
What about the roping around the pillars? Or did I just miss it? Like the super detailing. The broken down, rotten effect is great too.
Are you planning on doing some elements to attach boats to the lower levels? I think it would add a nice touch of realism.
Keep it up! Very interesting series. 🙂
Roping will be done too don’t worry 🙂
Oops… Damn hyperactive mouse. +1 I mean. 😛
Can’t believe how fast you guys build. This would make a great Malifaux table.
Shouldn’t the barnacles stay white (ish)? I like the look of the mix just dabbed on without the additional weathering.
Also, needs some green around the pilings for seaweed / algae / moss.
Agreed! The barnacles are a bit too weathered. Maybe a little drybrush to bring them back toward a sandy-white colour…
And yes also to a dark greenish colour at the bottom of the pillars (even if it’s only to represent the wetness caused by the waves and the tides).
I’m doing an experiment on kelp and seaweed at the moment if it works it will be in the video 🙂
I noticed that there are some patches of wood that have not taken the weathering stain, this is normally caused by the PVA wood glue. If you use an Aliphatic resin (yellow glue), often recommended in wooden boat model kits, it is designed for this purpose as it normally will take the stain the same as the wood, it also can be sanded off easily if you need to get back to the wood surface as it is not as “rubbery” as normal PVA glue.
Idea for @warzan ‘s fishnets: wrap tin foil over a pair of sections with different heights drape the dish cloth soaked in pva over so it goes from the lower one over the top in a straightened out Z shape, let it set on the foil over night, then peal the foil off- then you have modular movable nets to use as ladders.
I will give that a go!
Warren: to translate I think he meant “AL-U-MIN-E-UM” Foil. isn’t that how you all say that from the “islands”?
Climbing nets sound perfect for this setting.
For a moment I thought you meant @warzan was going to be wearing fishnets!!
Of course, you could have bought a packet of hooks instead of the eyes :p
If they had them we would have bought them lol
Making do mate 🙂
See a roll of wire mesh there. Are you going with the rope ladders idea then?
Love the giant shellfish. Characterful.
Possibly
Steps and ropes etc will come when we go to do the other stuff like piers with upright to tie too etc
Climbable fishing nets would be a great sneaky way to get to upper levels.
The build is looking great so far. Lots of potential for longship assaults and the like.
Curses that I have to watch these updates from work! LOL I’d love to be doing the same thing! That barnacle residue is a fantastic idea; consider it, like most of your ideas this build, stolen 🙂 I like the shells for your build but I fear at my scale it won’t work out at any level – so I might forego that aspect – and the chains – I like the chains – I had originally thought of hanging small lanterns from the underside of the tallest level and I was going to use ropes; but obviously you were… Read more »
It’s crazy how good that’s looking
I think the runners on the walkways could look great maybe somehting a bit thicker though as well with some tie downs on them for boats to tie up to.
It is looking amazing Warren, the shells and barnacle mix is a touch of genius. Keep going my little back stage content fairies, keep going…..
Would make a great Carnevale table :o)
That’s exactly what I was thinking. I haven’t come across too much scenery I would find suitable for Carnevale but a lot of the ideas here would definitely work for a dock or harbour area. Somewhere for the Rashaar to defend or hunt down trespassers. Or the Doctors trying to hunt down an escaped Cocodrilo!
Two things Warren, as the planking is in an extremely damp environment and is laid between to edges the timber without those outer runners tended to warp and become detached at the edges this was very true where whalers would off load their oil, or any load came ashore in heavy barrels the mackerel fleet would follow the mackerel down and and around the coast, following them would be the journeymen who fixed and repaired the docks. Anyhow thats what those strip’s were for. Second I built one of those one way gates and it works and looks ace, please… Read more »
Happy choozeday!?
Awesome board, would love to get a game on this.
Maybe some dead bodies/zombies in the fishing nets?
for your fishing net, this should work better maybe:

They, being made of plastic, will probably not take the PVA as well as the cotton based dish cloth material and also create a ‘webbing’ effect when the glue dries as it cannot soak into the plastic?
The Barnacle residue is nice, depending on whether Loch Death is tidal or not you could use the same mixture to build up some tidal barnacle deposits around the base of the wooden posts. See pic below for reference
http://c8.alamy.com/comp/A6CGA5/wood-dock-pilings-barnacles-A6CGA5.jpg
Small dots of the mixture applied with an old brush or even a tootpick would simulate barnacles well enough for 28mm scale
It’s all beginning to look rather wonderful. Clever old you.
This board is indeed wizardry. 🙂
love the shells & barnacle effect head sized shells are common in warmer waters look at the giant clams at 2/3 feet across. @warzan
a quick search of the net later.

“a quick search of the net later.”
No pun intended… 😉
Would love to have a description of how you painted the wooden decking modules. Were they washed, stained or spray coated? Cheers
Have you tried adding a green or brown ink to the spackle mix before you dab it on? Save you painting it later. I would also paint on some water effects for that wet look.
This is good stuff.
I wanted to suggest ‘cheese cloth’ or ‘butter muslin’ for the fishing nets. You can find them in cooking / baking shops, supermarkets etc…
Yep. Well impressed. I give it 15 mins for model mates to sell out of weathering spray.
Just out of interest, how many 10mm pine dowels did you guys use and what has the budget been so far?
This idea is brillant I’m not so sure about age of sigmar but this table is ace!
you should take a look at pictures of the (former) sea gipsy village Koh Panyee. The only building on land is the huge Mosk and the graveyard, all their houses are on the same level but still you might get some great ideas. they have ‘cages’ around the villages where they put the fish they just caught to keep them for later. cages like that could be a nice extra to put in the water around your village.
