Community Spotlight: Wild West Gangs, Trench Offensives & Dragon Dioramas
November 1, 2023 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Wild West by orinoco
We start off with some work by orinoco who has been wombling free in the Wild West with some awesome painted miniatures for use in games of Dead Man's Hand. A whole host of characters have come together including some classic Gunfighters using the plastic miniatures from Great Escape Games.
The painting on these miniatures is awesome and properly gets across the ace "dusty frontier" look that you get from the movies and in pictures from the period. I really like the dark outfits for the head honchos in this set and the faded look of the clothing as a whole. I also appreciate the amount of effort going into that facial hair, especially the minty bearded gentleman on the right hand side!
As well as some fellows doing a bit of shooting, there's also this set of ladies from the frontier!
These Daughters Of The West are looking just as awesome as their male counterparts and would be great for all manner of encounters in the middle of town. These are going to be great bandits and outlaws as well as townsfolks and heroines who are looking to put things right. I like the lady in the middle with the pink/purple waistcoat as she has main character energy!
It's neat to see the miniatures all painted up and I really like the photography as a whole here. Also, orinoco's terrain is major goals! It is making me think again about my own terrain and how much effort I should probably be putting into it.
Trench Offensive by warbossd
Next up, we turn our attention to warbossd who has been doing some great stuff when it comes to their Trench Offensive collection which is to be used in the game by Pandyman Entertainment. We've got some British and German troops slugging it out in the trenches.
The miniatures here look to come from the two-player starter set for the game which impressed warbossd after playing a demo at Diceni in Norwich 2023. Some great research has gone into painting up the British as you can see here as well as the Germans. There are some nice reference pictures in the Project showing off what was used as guidance for the uniforms and kit that they're lugging around with them.
I really like these as guidelines for painting up World War I troops beyond their use in something like Trench Offensive too. You could use this to help out with your miniatures for all manner of games so make sure to bookmark that project!
Capping things off, we also got a look at this impressive board set up which gives you an idea of what Trench Offensive could be like to play on a lovely board!
It seems like that demo did the trick and it was great to see the miniatures coming together so nicely from warbossd. They're for a game that I've not really seen much of before and so I am now intrigued to go and do a bit of digging to find out more about it. If it features rampaging geese (see above) then I might be drawn in.
Dragon Diorama by demonsub
Last but not least, we have demonsub who has been working away on an impressive 15mm Dragon diorama which uses some wonderful miniatures from Alternative Armies.
The diorama shows off a clash between a band of adventurers who are traversing the countryside and the dragon who has lodged a complaint with them concerning their direction of travel! I like to think that maybe the heroes are trying to make off with the dragon's treasure and they have finally met their match!
The painting on the 15mm miniature is great and the attention to detail throughout the build of the diorama is also properly impressive. I really like all the little stories being told with the miniatures and the work that has gone into the landscape to make it feel natural. Of course, the Heroic Stupid Knight/Paladin is facing down the dragon whilst the Rogue hides in the shadows ready to strike and the Wizard runs for cover!
A great use of miniatures and materials as well as a wonderful project that helps to nail down the process of bringing all of this to life. I could see folks, much like with the Trench Offensive project, using this as a guide to help them with their own painting. Not only that but it's also bloody inspirational!

Well deserved golden Buttons
All three projects look great. I love seeing how different people choose to assemble and paint the figures in the DMH sprues (and being from Colorado I have a soft spot for wild west games in general). I agree with what Warren said in the XLBS about warbossd’s figures — I love the smooth, simple paint jobs, it almost reminds me of animation. And the diorama is fantastic! I missed what range these figures are from, but the style reminds me a lot of the old Ral Partha D&D miniatures from the ’80s.
The miniatures for the diorama all came from Alternative armies and yes, they all originated from the 80s.
Thanks for the golden button and a big congratulations to the other two projects.
