Wasteland Genestealer Cults by corax.cox

This week, we start off with a return to an older project. corax.cox had been working on their Genestealer Cults army for Warhammer 40,000 which had a wasteland feel to it, drawing inspiration from the likes of Mad Max. The miniatures we'd seen so far featured some interesting techniques and it was turning into an awesome project. Well, it has been quiet for a little while now until we got a burst of pictures recently.

Genestealer Cults #2 by Corax cox

The Genestealer Cults force from corax.cox continues the Grimdark feel of the force and that ramshackle look of the army, complete with plenty of rust. You've also got plenty of sand and grit worked into the miniatures that really help to ground them in their wasteland setting.

The same theme carries through into the basic troops that you can see above too. I really like the stylistic choice here, especially with the brighter skin and chitinous features against the darker armour and weapons. The "fur" technique continues as well, a fantastically unique element of this project that helps the miniatures stand out.

We even saw some brilliant, chunky vehicles that the Genestealers are going to be bringing to the battlefield.

A brilliant bit of kitbashing alongside the core kit. Whilst this project might have come to an end at the moment, we got to see the army on the tabletop at Warhammer World in a video over on the project and I hope that whenever corax.cox steps back into working on this army, we get to see more fun character miniatures and quirky vehicles.

Mythic Battles: Ragnarok by jeffersonpowers

Next up, we're looking at more of the work by jeffersonpowers on their collection of Mythic Battles: Ragnarok miniatures. One of the most impressive miniatures that caught my eye was their take on Fafnir, a mighty dragon from Norse Mythology.

Mythic Battles Ragnarok #1 by jeffersonpowers

The work on Fafnir here is excellent and I like how the skin of this slippery beast has been done. There is a real sense of texture to the way the skin has been painted and I was particularly drawn to the face and those snapping jaws!

Mythic Battles Ragnarok #3 by jeffersonpowers

I also really liked the work that jeffersonpowers did on the miniatures for Hel. It is a brave choice to dive in and do a scheme like this but I think it works exceptionally well.

Mythic Battles Ragnarok #2 by jeffersonpowers

The idea was to match the artwork from the game as closely as possible and I think that jeffersonpowers has done a sterling job here. The painting is neat and they have managed to capture the details on both sides of the miniatures. It could easily have looked very plain. I think the shading and highlighting work is great and the red eyes are an excellent draw.

Aquaman by nightrunner

Last but not least, we have a visit to a project that Gerry pointed me at a few weeks ago. I wanted to wait a little bit as nightrunner had already got their hands on a golden button in recent months but I feel like I can't wait any longer!

Aquaman #2 by nightrunner

Looking to challenge themselves, nightrunner wanted to work on not just a big miniature but also play around with oil paints. With that in mind, nightrunner got their hands on a plastic figure from eBay and started the journey of painting the real Aquaman using inspiration and guidance from James Wappel.

Aquaman #1 by nightrunner

Whilst nightrunner admits that this style of painting the medium used isn't going to be for everyone, they have really enjoyed the process and I think it shows in the final look of the miniature. nightrunner has managed to pull out that bright, poppy cartoon colour scheme for Aquaman and really enhance the figure, especially considering the starting point as a cheap toy!

Aquaman #3 by nightrunner

nightrunner goes into detail about the process of bringing this miniature to life in their project. They go through the various steps, getting used to the techniques and showing the stages of bringing it to life. As well as a fantastic final miniature, you've also got the awesome diorama-style base for the figure and the wonderful background too. I think this miniature might get past Lloyd's hatred of plinths.

nightrunner has done a superb job here on Aquaman and just goes to show that if you play around with techniques and put the time into learning them, you could end up being able to paint some stunning figures.
