Community Spotlight: Vampires, Finishing The Fight & Victoriana Terrain
December 11, 2024 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Soulblight Gravelords by miniaturebrushwork
We crack on with Community Spotlight this week and delve into the work of miniaturebrushwork who has begun their adventures in The Mortal Realms with some Soulblight Gravelords. The plan is to get to a mighty 1500-point army and use Speedpaint to paint the majority of the units so that more time can be invested into painting the heroes. Some of those heroes marked the start of the project!
Ivya Volga leads the way with a fantastic paint scheme showing off possibly one of the best miniatures from the Soulblight Gravelords range. I think the bright blue and red on the vampire works well and contrast really nicely with the darker fur and the bats. It gives you a sense of the duality of the person behind the bloodsucking monster.
As well as her, miniaturebrushwork also worked on an equally awesome villain Sekhar. She took miniaturebrushwork's skills in a different direction, moving away from flowing fabrics and furs and instead introducing some gorgeous metallics.
Another fantastic paint job on this miniature and I was particularly taken by the patterning on the snake. The big flowing red cloak also came out beautifully. I also like the basing for this army, going with a slightly autumnal, which seems fitting for these undying lords and ladies drifting through twilight. There is more to come as part of the project and the first of the units have been painted up recently to join this tidal wave of monstrous death.
Halo: Flashpoint by hairybrains
Moving from the world of Warhammer Age Of Sigmar, we're now diving into the Sci-Fi world of Halo. hairybrains has got their hands on the brand new Halo: Flashpoint from Mantic Games and worked on painting up the contents including Master Chief and some of the ace Elites.
Master Chief is a more complicated miniature to paint than you'd first think but I reckon that hairybrians has managed to do a pretty good job on this Spartan hero. The Two Thin Coats range has done a nice job on the armour and I like all of the highlighting which helps to make the miniature pop, especially from that wargamer's eye view.
My favourite miniatures from this project however are the Elites from Flashpoint.
The Elites are a favourite of mine from Halo and I often liked playing as them more than Spartans in Halo 2! The blue armour has come out really, really well and it looks just like the standard Elite armour scheme from the video game. I also liked the work on hairybrain's energy swords with that smart edge highlight works a treat.
I can't wait to see what else hairybrains does with the set and more of the painting that they do on the other Spartans. It will be cool to see if they go down the route of painting them in Red or Blue or go a little wilder with the schemes to match the ways that you can often personalise your Spartans in the video game.
Victoriana Terrain by hutch
Last but not least, we have some excellent terrain from the one and only hutch. They have been working on this stonking project for a while now and really put the pedal to the metal during TerrainFest this year.
hutch is driven to do as much terrain as possible it seems and they are super good at it! In this immense project, Gothic Horror, Steampunk and Medieval Fantasy met up in hutch's head and that's where this project was born. Now, it is a sprawling urban landscape packed with houses, cobbled streets, sewers, leafy avenues and more.
This project is a brilliant mix of 3D printing and traditional terrain-building skills that meld together with boundless enthusiasm and some great painting. Each section of hutch's cityscape is a sight to behold but its when you start to get into all of the little details that you see just how much work hutch has done to make this pop.
How can you not be in awe of what hutch has been doing?! The fact that this isn't just the streets of the city but also the sewer systems and tunnels beneath the roads is insane. What's wild is that this project shows no signs of stopping and new sections of bridges and more are coming to the set as you read this! What's also great is that the set is pretty modular and can be switched from Steampunk to Fantasy and back again just by changing out the houses. Wild!
