Community Spotlight: Beginning The Barons’ War, Epic Heresy & Kings Of War Ambush
July 12, 2023 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
The Barons' War by piers
We're starting off this week's Community Spotlight with a look at what piers has been up to. As someone who loves diving into the Historical, they have turned their attention to The Barons' War and started up a new warband for use in the Warhost and Footsore Miniatures & Games wargame.
One of the neat things about The Barons' War is that you get to pin your colours to the mast for a particular Baron. piers went with William FitzGeoffrey, Early Of Essex. He also happens to have some of piers' favourite colours in his heraldry and so it doesn't seem like it took long to bosh out a bunch of miniatures. The finish on them is great and I love seeing all the grubby details on these fellows.
It's quite nice seeing the painting up of the miniatures from piers as well as some of the background information on the army and the building of the warband too. Having the miniatures matched with the rules helps those who are looking to dive into the game and considering what kinds of units they might want to take. I also have quite a soft spot for grizzled Medieval miniatures and these have been painted up that way!
As well as some of the bodyguards, you also have some of the painting of the Baron and his retinue. It's nice to see the process of painting up these different miniatures and the various stages that piers goes through when bringing these to life.
piers is a bit of a dynamo when it comes to painting and I would imagine it won't be long until this entire warband has been painted up and hits the table. There is a nice look at what piers has lined up and it's quite the sea of metal. I am very eager to see the final look of this warband and maybe some folks will jump in and follow along with their own armies.
Epic Iron Warriors by elessar2590
Moving to the Grimdark Future, we have a look at some rather pertinent painting from elessar2590. They wanted to dive in and do some Horus Heresy painting but decided to do it at a MUCH smaller scale. They went with Epic and decided to paint up a Legion of Iron Warriors. Not only the rank and file but a host of vehicles and more have made it into this collection and it looks darn impressive.
The 3D Printer was powered up for this particular venture into the hobby and I think the miniatures look ace. It has been pretty fun seeing the painting that has gone into the Tactical Squads alongside some of the more specialised units like the Terminators. There is even a very tiny Primarch in there which is fun to see.
A breakdown of painting those hazard stripes on everything has been documented in the project but I love how the army just pops on the tabletop. You could imagine these super soldiers powering across the battlefield in their droves and I think Epic scale miniatures properly sell the grandeur of this particular period in Warhammer history.
As well as the miniatures that you see here, there are also some fun extra bits and pieces in the project. For example, there are even some terrain pieces that you can see elessar2590 has worked on which are going to be handy when setting up appropriate battlefields.
With the coming of Legions Imperialis, it seems apt for elessar2590 to consider using this for their army when the game lands. I would love to see elessar2590 also work on doing another army that could end up going up against this one on the tabletop. Look at all those lovely Contemptor Dreadnoughts!
Kings Of War: Ambush by gorram
Last but not least, we have gorram who has been working away on an excellent project that is all about powering through a project and nailing it! Over eleven days, gorram worked to bring a Nightstalker army from Kings Of War from boxes of plastic to a fully painted army that got to play in a bunch of games!
In an effort to banish some brain goblins and help focus their hobby, gorram decided to sit down and paint up an army for a game at the start of July. They wanted to get their eye in on something and see if they could power through a project in double time, finishing it all off with speedy paints!
What's really nice about this project is that it charts the progress of the force over each of the days running up to the game. It starts with some serious planning and then goes into working out the basing, the paint schemes, the method of painting and more.
There is a fun breakdown of trials and tribulations and I absolutely love how the miniatures (and the bases) ended up looking. I think the bright and poppy Contrast paints work really well and it was simply a case of working with those over a zenithal base. Some metallic was used on the weapons and that was that! I also think that the basing for the different units is superb and works really well to frame the miniatures.
The project also finishes off with a breakdown of the games that were played and how that all went plus a summing up of the painting process and whether or not they would try something like this again. Not to spoil anything (read the project!) but it was nice to see that the process helped and delivered a satisfying outcome for gorram. We all need some little wins every now and again and this felt like one!
