Testing Grimdark by amachan

We start off this week's Community Spotlight by visiting what amachan has been getting up to. They have been experimenting with Grimdark painting techniques on a whole bunch of different miniatures, testing out oils, weathering details, mud, blood and more in the hopes of developing their own style by the end of it.

Grimdark Experiments #1 - amachan

It's quite interesting diving into amachan's project as there is a lot of detail in there on getting the miniature from the classic basecoat stage through to the more weathered end product that you see here. amachan goes to great pains to break down the process throughout the course of painting the miniatures and showing off how different paints and other weathering mediums help to achieve the final look.

Grimdark Experiments #2 - amachan

It has been really fascinating looking at the progress that has gone into painting the different miniatures and then achieving a cool end result. That means that occasionally you're going to get some experiments that don't work but that's also where you learn. With that in mind, even if some projects don't end up coming out as you expected, they are learning experiences so you know where to go next time.

Grimdark Experiments #3 - amachan

It's also really nice seeing how some of these experiments have worked on different miniatures. I think the "Grimdark" style for the first miniatures shown here works really well and equally, the brighter and poppier Romano British soldier here looks just as good with a splash of blood and mud on his shields. It fits really nicely which is key. Grimdark is tough to get right but it is also super fun to play around with.

Dungeon Saga Orcs by rayzryr

Next up, we're going to be showing off a project that has been completed. Here rayzryr has finished painting up all of the miniatures from The Warlord Of Galahir set for Dungeon Saga. That is a lot of Orcs and that makes sense for Orktober.

Greenskins #1 by rayzryr

So, here we have some of the finished pictures of the different miniatures, presented in their dungeon-based surroundings. We were talking about Grimdark earlier and I think that the work that rayzryr has done here would be pretty close to the style of painting that amachan is also working on. It's a scheme that focuses on getting across a "mood" which I think is cool.

Greenskins #2 by rayzryr

I liked the Orcs themselves but it was some more of the monstrous characters that I was particularly excited about. I thought that the work on the Trolls was awesome and I was most impressed by the way that the armour has turned out on the miniatures.

Greenskins #3 by rayzryr

It is well worth diving into more from this project and seeing how the evolution of the boxed set and the miniatures within has gone since the project started. Maybe you'll get some inspiration for your own Orc projects in the future.

Medieval Temptation by piers

Last but not least, we have a bit of Medieval temptation by piers. They recently saw that SAGA: Age Of Chivalry is on the way and so wanted to test out some painting and modelling on some of the Claymore Castings range which is very nice indeed.

Medieval Miniatures #1 by piers

As always, piers has done a great job on this fellow and he works very nicely for Age Of Chivalry but it also looks like they're going to be finding a life in Soldiers of the Black Prince as well. This was also a way for piers to show off some more of the miniatures they have been working on for the Medieval era.

Medieval Miniatures #2 by piers

Maybe this will be another reason for Gerry to get dragged into the world of Medieval wargaming. I always like seeing the clash of metallics and then all of those bright colours on Medieval miniatures, showing off that these battlefields weren't dull and muddy. Well, they were very muddy eventually and very bloody as well.

Medieval Miniatures #3 by piers

I am eager to see what else piers experiments with when it comes to building up this Medieval force for SAGA: Age Of Chivalry and beyond. Maybe we'll see more experiments popping up in the near future.
