Community Spotlight: Star Trek Away Teams, Oldhammer & Runequesting!
December 8, 2021 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Star Trek / Galactic Heroes by TJafk
We start off with some awesomeness from tjafk who has been working away on an absolutely awesome project. The focus is on creating a project documenting some Star Trek themed adventures on the tabletop using the Galactic Heroes rules by Wiley Games.
One of the core things that brought me to this project was the fact that we have so many awesomely painted bands of Star Trek miniatures. As well as the traditional Starfleet miniatures we also have the likes of the Jem'Hadar from The Dominion and even some Ferengi!
I really liked the painting on display here. It gets across the unique look of each of the different alien species whilst also introducing some ways to personalise each of the characters. I like the difference you get in the more professional Jem'Hadar through to the more ragtag band of Ferengi.
The best part of this project though is the fact that it is holistic. Not only does the project show off painted miniatures but loads of lore and background on them in-game. Plus, there are loads of session reports and battle reports for you to check out!
This is just one of many, many photos taken showing off the different characters and their stories that are being told on the tabletop. tjafk has done a solid job of putting together this project, showing off the various missions each of the teams have been on. It's a great way to immerse yourself and get excited for something Trek-like on the tabletop.
Oldhammer Empire by horus500
The next of the projects we're looking at comes from horus500. I am a sucker for anything Warhammer Fantasy Battles and so it was neat to see some more of this Oldhammer Empire goodness hitting the tabletop.
There are some classic miniatures in this collection that are being given a bit of a new lease on life. For example, I love this classic Karl Franz on Deathclaw. It reminds me of the style that got me so excited by the prospect of Warhammer back in the day.
As is the case with a lot of projects, it seems like it has ballooned out somewhat. horus500 was only going to paint a handful of Engineers and now a full-on warband has come to life it seems.
Look at those lovely square bases. They'll rank up so nicely when they get put into a regiment tray. The Empire has certainly been the focus for a little while with these Spearmen all ranked up and ready for battle too. A great use of the Nordland scheme.
It will be fascinating to see what gets pulled from horus500's collection next and added into the mix as part of this Empire army. It is making me feel seriously nostalgic and I wish that I knew where my old Empire was! I think it might have been dashed to pieces many years ago by moving around within boxes.
Runequest by elysium64
The last of the projects was for something a little different. Runequest is seeing something of a resurgence and so elysium64 put together this project painting up heroes and more for use in the game.
The worlds of Runequest and Glorantha are a fascinating one that brings together a Conan-esque dark feel alongside something classical and distinctly Mediterranean and Middle Eastern. With that in mind, it certainly informs the kind of characters you paint and how they all look too.
These miniatures have come from a variety of different sources but they all carry over a neat and interesting look and feel. I love all the muscles on display, the heft of bronze arms and armour. This is all then complemented by the rugged basing which puts me in mind of rubble-strewn ruins in the depths of deserts.
You also get splashes of colour like with this particular birdy fellow. A nice way to mix things up.
It is worth diving into this project as elysium64 has done a stonking job on painting up all manner of monsters and more for the collection too. I can't wait to see more of the characters that come to life as part of this project, especially if more of the Lucid Eye range pops up!

Ah, familiar faces! XD
those Star Trek miniatures are excellent – even if I scoff at anything outside of TOS!
I can’t watch original series now, the sets were dreadful and the acting worse.
I think every trekkie has their favorite Trek. There are guys in our group that are absolute simps for TOS, and few that are Ride or Die for TNG, I personally am all about DS9, Dave is a fanboy of Voyager. Pretty much the whole gamut. Every Trekkie has their favorite Trek Series and Favorite Trek Movie.
For our group half the fun is spending the evening arguing about star trek.
Runequest minis look good. Woman wearing chainmail and it’s not a bikini… how strange… it will never catch on.
Oh wow! Hey thank you so much for the recognition. I am so glad to hear that you enjoy reading about our campaign. Im genuinely flattered.
