Waelstowe Wargaming by athelstane

We start off this week's Community Spotlight with a look at a bit of solo wargaming from athelstane. They have been diving in and having some fun in the Dark Ages and developing their own set of solo wargaming rules! This also caught my eye because the battles that have been showcased took place around a river that I know well!

Waelstowe #1 by athelstane

The first thing we should talk about is the rules themselves. athelstane has talked quite a bit about this and I'm sure that you could ask them if you could get your hands on the rules too! The game is rules lite and Waelstowe uses cards to drive the action. The opponent uses a pre-determinded list of actions and the human player then works their way down the list to choose the action that feels the most appropriate for the moment.

The focus of the game is around heroes and in essence, the game is using the mechanics to tell a story rather than being something uber competitive. Everything is done in the spirit of the story and as athelstane has said, there might be plenty of chanting in the background music-wise and a good ale or two in hand when playing this game.

What's really nice about the project is that, as well as exploring a little bit of the rules, it is also full of wonderful photos of wargaming in progress and some little snippets of story too! I grew up alongside the River Stour and so it was awesome to see this tale woven around this particular waterway. The project has garnered plenty of attention and hopefully, we'll see more stories told about Waelstowe as the project expands.

Star Wars: ShatterPunk by asuranshadow

Next up, we have some alternative paint schemes for use in your Star Wars games thanks to asuranshadow. As they have pointed out in the description of the project, Shatterpoint allows you to take events in different directions and build squads of soldiers and characters that come from all facets of Star Wars history. With that in mind, why not play around with the colour schemes?!

ShatterPunk #1 by asuranshadow

I really like the colour choices that asuranshadow has gone for with these miniatures. The very poppy greens and purples with Ashoka and Maul are particularly awesome. I can see where the "punk" side of things has come into the equation when it comes to describing these miniatures.

ShatterPunk #2 by asuranshadow

You get a lot more of the awesomeness when it comes to these brilliant Droids that asuranshadow has been working on. How awesome do these purple droids look? They are immediatly poppy and unique. With a game as "Saturday Morning Cartoon" as Shatterpoint, going for something like this really makes sense and is a welcome change from seeing the definitive look to these characters that we see pop up all the time.

ShatterPunk #3 by asuranshadow

asuranshadow has done a lot of work on these miniatures and there are plenty more for you to check out in the project itself. I am really liking the Mandalorians but you should also get a good look at the Clone Troopers that have been painted up as part of this too. It would be awesome to see folks doing something similar for other games based on licences like Marvel: Crisis Protocol.

The Walking Dead: Project Cornetto by murphy909

Last but most asuredly not least we have an immense The Walking Dead: All Out War project from murphy909. Project Cornetto started back in 2016 and developed as part of a love for the game from Mantic. Now, as we find ourselves in 2024, the project has been completed and it is absolutely stunning.

Project Cornetto #1 by murphy909

The Walking Dead is quite American of course but murphy909 has stepped in and given things a very British upgrade. As you might have guessed by the name of the project and the appearance of a particular bakery, this undead experience takes place on an exhaustively re-created British tabletop.

Project Cornetto #2 by murphy909

Not only is the local town covered but the impressive rural landscape that surrounds it as well. There are so many awesome nods to British society throughout and of course Shaun Of The Dead which has had a big influence on the development of this project. As well as showcasing the growth of the project and the expansion of the terrain (including a move from classic MDF to the more modern 3D Printed resin!), this is also a great breakdown in the way that the game that murphy909 has been playing has expanded too.

Project Cornetto #3 by murphy909

Seriously, look at that. This is a great look at the board (if you can call it that!) in all (most) of its glory and there is plenty more for you to get your teeth stuck into. We haven't even closed in on The Winchester pub itself that serves as the objective for Shaun and his friends. A HUGE project and a good way for us to close out the first Community Spotlight of 2024.
