Community Spotlight: Slaine, Puppet Power & Amazing Away Teams
May 29, 2024 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Slaine by Guru335
We start off with the work by guru335 who has decided to try and get their collection of miniatures for Slaine painted up and ready for the tabletop. They dove into Slaine off the back of other Warlord Games but it didn't get painted until the new Spring Clean Hobby Challenge rolled around.
The miniatures are looking awesome and it has been good to see the evolution of the paint schemes and the process of bringing them to life change over the course of the project. Some actual work-in-progress images have been added in across different entries starting from that initial base coat through to the way the different colours have been applied.
What's nice is that this has come out of an interesting back-and-forth around Contrast and Speed Paints. Whilst initially not quite convinced by them, it looks like they have found the right way to make these paints work for them and I think you'll agree, the final result looks superb. The Slaine miniatures are ace and absolutely packed with character. The way that guru335 has painted these also brings out that comic book/graphic novel look of the source material.
This is a great project for you to dive into and have a read of. As well as looking at the pretty pictures, guru335 has done a solid job of explaining the process and some tips and tricks as to how to bring these miniatures to life. Maybe dive in and have a read of this project over a cup of tea!
Relics Britanans by b.g.cobden
Next up, and following in the footsteps of John, b.g.cobden has been showing off their work on the Britanans who have been languishing in their collection for a while. With the resurgence of the game under TTCombat, it looks like these puppets are going to be making it back to the tabletop.
b.g.cobden has done a great job on these miniatures and managed to make them pop regardless of how tiny they are! I really like the good pop of vibrant red and the subtle highlighting throughout the collection that helps to make each miniature pop. I also really love those bases for these miniatures, framing the miniatures nicely.
As with the first project for this week, this one is packed with descriptions and helpful guides for getting these miniatures to come to life on the tabletop. There is even a bit of research on historical references when it comes to getting these uniforms looking suitable for these plucky puppets.
One of my favourites was his little drummer puppet!
I also like those streaks and lines that b.g.cobden has used on the cloth material that makes up their bodies. It helps to add some texture to the miniatures and give you a sense of what they are made of. Even more miniatures are going to be popping up for this collection and I reckon this could be a bit of a race to see who finishes first!
Dark Woods by Lovecraft2020
Last but not least, we have lovecraft2020 who has been showing off the process of creating a new set of handmade trees for use in their games. Starting from the very basic level, lovecraft2020 has gone through the development of these trees since the first range and what has changed now returning to the project.
As someone who is seemingly allergic to building foliage for my gaming tables, projects like this are good for helping me get over that hurdle. I also like that these trees have been crafted to look gnarled and horrible, perfect for all manner of grimdark tabletops. I believe these are going to be for The Old World.
The process for making these trees has been broken down over on the project and I like that you can see an evolution in the workflow for these miniatures. The new style of trees look superb and whilst the process isn't finished, you can see how good the final product is going to be.
Make sure to dive in and follow along with this project. One thing I do really like is that the trees and the natural detritus are there to showcase where the "wood" is but there is plenty of space for you to put a regiment tray or a band of skirmishing warriors.

Well done all ?
Thanks for sharing my project! I appreciate the Spring Clean helping me get these minis on the table 🙂
Love the Slaine stuff! I particularly like the deep shading on the flesh tones, really look like the old Simon Bisley Horned Rat artwork.
Well done all, well deserved.
Thanks for the Golden Button!
The past two weeks have been busy at work, so I didn’t get enough time to hobby or post pictures, but I just added some color pictures to my project ?
I looove these trees!!!
And good job for the others!
