Community Spotlight: Ruined Towers, Elven Abodes & Blood Ravens!
December 4, 2024 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Ruined Tower by Lovecraft2020
We start off this week's Community Spotlight with an exploration of what lovecraft2020 has been doing. That fiendish human (cat) has been scratch-building some terrain for use in grim, dark wargames like Mordheim. This is all crafting with no 3D printing and just plenty of tinkering bringing it to life.
Nature and pound stores became the basis for this product and I think you'll agree that even though the terrain piece is a few steps away from being finished, it is looking fantastic. You'd never tell that this was made out of cardboard, foam, pebbles and clay. The detail work and painting have seriously elevated this into a great piece of terrain.
One of the nice things about the terrain is how lovecraft2020 has gone to great lengths to make the terrain piece fun from a playability perspective. There are lots of different ways to get into the building so even though it provides you with an advantage when you're inside it, you still have a way to get inside and stop a sneaky archer.
I also like the little details here and there. The puddle at the back of the building is a great touch, especially with the skeletal remains at the bottom. A shallow grave perhaps? Also, lovecraft2020 has made it so that the doors open and close so you can get an added bit of interactivity out of the build. I think this is fantastic and shows what you can do with rubbish and some elbow grease!
Elven Treehouse by ewokkebab
Next up, we're exploring a different style of tower using modern techniques. This towering Elven Treehouse is a mixture of both 3D printing and added detail work in order to turn it into a stunning showcase piece to sit at the heart of a collection. It is a seriously awesome project that has gone through multiple different stages of "beautification".
I think the thing that really sells the building to me is the amount of extra work that went into the vegetation. I think the work on all of the vines and the twisting nature of them winding their way around the building is fantastic and the finished result creates a brilliant look.
The eye gets drawn to all of the nice little details here and there. I imagine this must have taken a whole bunch of different packs in order to make it as vibrant and verdant as it was! You get the sense that this particular terrain piece is lived in as well and cared for by whoever lives there.
I always like seeing people do amazing terrain projects as I can live vicariously through their experiences and the finished products. It takes a lot for me to be motivated to paint terrain so seeing other people do excellent bits and pieces like this is a kick in the backside for me to get to work.
Blood Ravens by collins
Last but not least, we're having a look at the work of collins who is powering their way through the contents of the new Warhammer 40,000 Combat Patrol magazine. Taking a leaf out of my book to do Blood Ravens, they chose that for their paint scheme on the new Primaris Space Marines and they are looking glorious!
Dismayed at the loss of the old Space Marines from back in the day, collins was inspired to try again with the new, beefy Blood Ravens and the Primaris Space Marines of the new editions. I think the look of the Blood Ravens scheme is pretty on point and I love how poppy it is. The big, chunky highlights work really well for Space Marines and define them on the battlefield from a wargaming perspective.
As well as the Terminator Captain, the Infernus Marines also got painted up and it is so awesome seeing the Blood Ravens painted so well for the tabletop. This is hitting all of the nostalgia buttons.
There is a full breakdown of what inspired the paint scheme in the project link above and a good look at all of the source material that got these miniatures over the line. The source for the decals is also listed in the project if you'd like to get some of your own for painting up your own Chapter of Blood Ravens.
I can't wait to see how collins tackles the rest of the Combat Patrol magazines and if they go all in on the rest of the armies that will pop up down the line. This is a good start when it comes to the Blood Ravens and Tyranids though!
