Community Spotlight: Red Coats, Black Templars, & Golden Beards
April 27, 2023 by avernos
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Rebels And Redcoats - War in the colonies by Denzien
The Redcoats are coming, the Redcoats are coming!! First up is an on off project from Denzien who is once again focusing in on his love of historical gaming, this time around it is the War of Unchecked Colonial Aggression as the thirteen colonies take exception to the price of capitalism and kick off for no reason at all.
Be my guest at the Chew House in Germantown. Denzien has once again been adding to not only his forces but also to the tabletop with a range of bespoke terrain for his games and the mansion from Charlie Foxtrot is an excellent example of this. The project also shows off some build and painting tips for the terrain. It gives it a fantastic lived in look.
The most recent entry is a photo gallery battle report of some of a muskets & tomahawk game where the crowns mission was to massacre the civilians and the officer side intrigue was to meet an informant while the patriots had to kill half the enemy force.
In a scene that could have come straight out of the unbiased historical epic The Patriot the game ended with the opposing commanders meeting at a ford. Unfortunately it seems to have come from the end of the first act. A host of historical facts, painting blogs and information for painting various units makes this a great resource for people who fancy getting into some Independence wargaming.
Mortal vs Marco by DarkDanegan
Next up DarkDanegan has decided to put Marco's money where his mouth is. After watching a fair bit of Not Just Mecha he's decided that really all Marco does is repeat the same techniques week in week out so why not bite the bullet and follow one of his tutorials. I mean how hard could it be...?
The fascinating thing for me is seeing someone attempting to follow along with Marco's style of painting and push themselves to try more complicated technical aspects of painting from the initial priming that Marco refers to as his value sketch through to the finished figure.
In some cases you can see where Marco's years of experience and practice in his work flow and technique make things very smooth, but DD has done some tremendous work in pushing himself further and you can see the results of this in things like the highlighted texture on the black fabric.
Taking a step out of your comfort zone to try something new can always be difficult. After all no one wants to fail, but if you don't make an attempt it is incredibly easy to get stuck in a rut. The finished result looks great, and some of the additional steps have really paid off and I'm sure we'll be seeing more of them, whether it's the contrast metallics, oil washes for depth, or the chromatic black. Overall DD has done great work and I'm hoping we see he continue to press himself in future.
40K Terrain by BMozzer
Last for this week is a bit of terrain by BMozzer for Warhammer 40,000 and it's a doozy, I believe there was one found under a capstone in 1920s but the gubment refuse to confirm it. This one however is definitely somewhere else in the universe as the DHD is still in situ beside it.
The gate itself is printed in resin from a thingiverse file along with a clear resin version of the event horizon and I think if you're going to do something like an active Stargate then taking the effort to make it this way really pays off.
The Jaffa are the foundation upon which the false gods have built their empires, so it seems appropriate that there is a bodyguard of the same to protect the gate and the Goa'uld. The simple metallics and nicely matched by the striking purple and Teal'C colours that really catch the eye for the unit.
Ra is clearly ready to deal with some primitive people that may be doubting that he is an actual god. I know that BMozzer is planning something I'll be interested to see what that plan is and may have suggested that they check out the SG-1 figures from Hasslefree. It would be the perfect set of figures to play out a 7TV game set in the Stargate universe and I want to see...nay, demand to see more from them.
