Community Spotlight: Viking Monsters, Shadowspear Heroes & Warcry Warriors
August 14, 2019 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Forums and Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking pieces this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Blood Rage Monsters by AkKedul
We start off this week with a look at some awesome monsters. Now, folks know that I like my Vikings and Blood Rage was top of my list of board games when it released, so, it was nice to see that user AkKedul has been painting up some of the creatures from the game. Check out this Troll...
The model looks very close to the artwork that we see for the game done by Adrian Smith and a lot of effort has been put into making this character come to life. I really like the old skin and the way it has been painted. It looks like this creature has existed for hundreds of years, wandering the land with that mythical weapon of his. The additional work on the gems which adorn the weapon are a really nice touch.
We also have a look at this mighty Frost Giant which, once again, is very like the artwork.
This model might look like it's all one colour but the amount of variation worked into the sculpt, using subtle highlights and shading to bring the model to life, really make it stand out on the tabletop. Once again, the little details across the model like the toenails and the facial features being drawn out really make the model. Additionally, the little bit of extra snow added to the massive rock the Frost Giant is holding helps build a cool narrative.
There are already more models being painted as part of this projects so I would recommend going up top and clicking through to see more from AkKedul.
Shadowspear Heroes & Villains by aj86
Next up we're looking to the work of aj86 who was tasked with painting the entire of the Shadowspear boxed set. Having only just finished I would say that I would be very happy if I had got these handed over to me!
aj86 chose both a Chapter and Legion for this boxed set and painted up the entirety of each force to match. For the Space Marines, aj86 chose Blood Angels and I really like the muted colour scheme that was used across the models. It reminds me a little bit of the Blood Ravens armour colour.
But, as you can see there is a lot of detail worked into these sculpts and so much detail has been added into the mix. The armour looks great, nice and clean, but it's when you see all the accessories and stuff that you see how much work has gone into the models. I really like that the bases have got the 'above and beyond' treatment, making these characters feel even more heroic.
The opposing army, the Chaos Space Marines, were painted up as Alpha Legion traitors. Here we can see the Master Of Possession who has been painted up like a fearsome leader with lots of epic balefire added into the mix.
This, again, is a fantastic take on the character and I really like that aj86 stepped away from going with Ultramarines and Black Legion. You can go and check out lots more from both armies on the project link above and, as I said before, I would be very pleased if this landed on my gaming table!
Warcry Warbands by lobstermooch
Last but not least we have lobstermooch who has been painting up warbands from the other end of the Warhammer spectrum. Check out some of the miniatures from his Warcry warbands.
Painted using a mix of Contrast paints and normal paints from Games Workshop these characters are looking fantastic. I really like the way the bone has come out on the Untamed Beasts, especially when matched against the fur and darker skin tones of these Chaos warriors.
Bone seems to come out looking awesome when painted using Contrast and this is made better across the board with these figures because the characters look so neat. The paint schemes here have been made clean and crips.
It wasn't just the Untamed Beasts that got painted up either as lobstermooch has also painted up the Iron Golems with an awesome looking alternative scheme.
As you can see here the bronze and metallics have then been given a good coating of green to help bring out specific parts of the model. Whilst I'm used to seeing red on the Iron Golems I think that green works just as well. It certainly moves the characters away from just looking like Khorne warriors.
In this case, the scheme is very simple in essence. A lot of bronze and metal across the board plus a darker skin tone and the splash of green makes the models look awesome. If you were worried about not being able to paint the entire of your Warcry set, maybe use this as a guide?
