Community Spotlight: Improving Your Painting, A Roman Bakery & Christmas Heroes
December 18, 2024 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Improving Your Painting by fithgodsmote
A lot of projects that we see here OnTableTop feature folks looking to better their skills or just explore new techniques but fithgodsmote's recent project really drills down into learning new techniques and showing off how they are changing and developing their miniature painting.
They are using the project to track how their painting has changed and what new techniques they have been learning. For example, they recently went on a Cult Of Paint brush skills course where they painted up some different miniatures and tried out all sorts of skills via the mighty Andy Wardle. From small legs to big busts, fithgodsmote also showed off the painting of their first Bust.
The idea here is to not only approach painting a different style of miniature but also try out all of those techniques learned during lessons. That means working up from a zenithal start, making use of an airbrush and then working up through different techniques.
As you can see, the process has been fun to see documented, even at this early stage and I hope that we're going to see more from fithgodsmote. I really liked the idea of a project which was focused on seeing the development and change of skills rather than just focusing on a particular miniature, army or game. This will be great to look back on later on down the line as fithgodsmote sees the change in their skill level. I'm sure it will be very rewarding.
A Roman Bakery by jeffersonpowers
The next project is one that shows off the process of building and painting a Roman Bakery for use in a bit of Gangs Of Rome. jeffersonpowers did an excellent job on this piece of terrain from Sarissa Precision, working on both the exterior and the interior.
Rather than going for a massive terrain painting project for TerrainFest this year, jeffersonpowers decided to just get stuck in and work on one piece. So began painting up the terrain piece itself as well as doing all of the detail work. That included the use of some good prismacolour markers to do the bits and pieces that might have been a bit fiddly with the use of a brush.
A whole bunch of different techniques were used including a liberal amount of drybrushing (which ended up breaking the brush!) and I was particularly taken by the nice way that the brighter and poppier colours were done, especially on the awnings and roof sections.
The Gangs Of Rome terrain is coming together as you can see and the Bakery is just one piece of this larger project. It stands out really nicely. You can get a few better sneak peeks inside the terrain on the link above including how it looks with some fresh-smelling bread set up for the populace to chow down on.
Christmas Miniatures by richsh
Last, but not least, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas with richsh who has been painting up some Christmas miniatures to use as part of a themed game to play over the festive period. All the favourites are here so far.
richsh is going to be charting how this Christmas-based game comes to life from the painting of the miniatures to the actual game itself I hope! The idea is to use OnePageRules to drive the game and I will be intrigued to see what it's all about. So far, we've seen miniatures for Father Christmas/Santa Claus and Mrs Claus.
The third of the miniatures for this project so far is Noelle who comes armed and dangerous! Perhaps someone has decided to try and invade the North Pole and needs to be sent packing?
Make sure to follow along with the development of this project and where richsh decides to take it. I am always intrigued by themed games and with OnePageRules, there is a lot of space for them to try all sorts of different things. Have you tried a Christmas-themed game before?
