Community Spotlight: A Garden Protector, Mighty Lizards & Glorantha For 2023!
January 18, 2023 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
The Garden's Protector by nightrunner
The first of these projects that we're going to be looking at for this week has been one I have had my eye on for a while. nightrunner has done an absolutely amazing job on bringing this wonderful diorama to life showcasing The Garden's Protector...
Rather than using a traditional box for this vignette/diorama, this has been put inside a wonderful little lantern that you might find out in a garden somewhere. Quite fitting. The thought and lore behind this are that some of the townsfolk have gone missing when heading into the garden and so a warrior has been sent to investigate their disappearances. Now, the mighty spirit of the garden is going to clash with the warrior!
Every element of this piece has come together so incredibly well and has been broken down on the project page. SO much work has gone into bringing the terrain to life and all of the wildlife that surrounds it. THEN, you've got the well-painted warrior and the treeman looming out from the background, ready to swat at the warrior who is probably looking for clues.
A lot of work has gone into this and I really like the additional work that you see on the back of the piece as well. The twisting vine-like designs there help to match the heavy foliage that obscures the treeman from the front of the piece. It suits very nicely and will look amazing when sat atop a mantlepiece. Kudos for having the little ribbon around it as well with that nice seal.
Lizardmen by amachan
Next up, we're having a look at the work by amachan who has been building up an army of Seraphon for use with Warhammer Age Of Sigmar and SAGA: Age Of Magic. The miniatures come from the One Page Rules collection and have been painted up over the last little while.
One of the nice things about amachan's project is that they have broken down the different elements, focusing on why and how they are approaching things in different ways. For example, the look of salamanders has been a big influence on these particular Lizardmen and the Kroxigors here.
The final result is a fantastic-looking set of miniatures that have taken inspiration from real-life Lizardmen whilst also properly exploring the different Fantasy elements that make these miniatures unique. I am particularly sold on the big toothy maws, the additional markings here and there and the wonderful jewels.
It all works super well and I think that there is plenty here contrast-wise to make these miniatures pop. I also like the basing. It's identifiably "jungle" without it being a traditional jungle look. The few spots of colour here and there work well with the sand, dirt and grass to make each of them work.
Brilliant work and I can't wait to see more coming out for this project as it grows throughout the year.
Glorantha 2023 by elysium64
Last but not least, we're looking at more work from elysium64 who is getting back on the Glorantha train. 2023 is a new year and a bunch of additional miniatures have come to life from elysium64 when it comes to building up this Fantasy world on the tabletop, especially for roleplaying adventures.
Whilst they have noted that there hasn't been a lot of work going into these miniatures, I think these look brilliant and I would be quite happy to play with these on the tabletop. There is a good mix of different miniatures here from the likes of Lucid Eye and Hasslefree here that get across that Bronze Age Fantasy feel that works its way into all elements of Glorantha.
So many different characters have been added into the mix now and I very much appreciate the painting here but also the photography of these miniatures. I love that there are so many different characters in the mix and it seems like a good idea to use the start of 2023 to get miniatures finished up and ready for the tabletop.
Some additional and very funky miniatures have also been added to the mix. These wild fellows with weapons at the ready are no doubt going to be hounding a band of heroes across a tabletop soon. Things are looking up for the world of Glorantha and it seems like additional miniatures are going to be landing soon.
