Community Spotlight: Ancient Elves, Bot War & Malifaux Madness
June 23, 2021 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Ancient Elves by rayzryr
We start off this week's Community Spotlight as we dive into some painting by rayzryr on a raft of different Elves. Yes, the pointy-eared princelings are getting a look in!
There are all manner of Elves in this collection that have been painted up nicely. Some of them are from classic Warhammer Fantasy Battles but we've also got some from Raging Heroes and even a bit of Mordheim as well.
Each of the miniatures has been painted up alongside a little guide as to how the final effect was achieved. I absolutely love this Dark Elf scheme as an example. The skin came out really nicely and I like the blood-red eyes and runs across her weapons.
One of my favourite miniatures from Mordheim was this fellow, Aenur, Sword Of Twilight.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on a copy of this fellow and I painted him up as Felix Jaeger. I didn't have the money as a kid to get the official miniatures so it was neat to snap this fellow up and paint him up to match one of my favourite heroes.
The work here on Aenur is fantastic though. I love the "night" scheme that has been achieved across the miniature and the freehand work at the bottom of the cloak is bloomin' on point. A fantastic miniature.
Bot War by rum8le
Next up, we're looking at some painting by rum8le who has been tinkering away on some Bot War goodness. I wonder how much influence Gerry had on this particular project? These are some excellently painted miniatures from their underground hit of a range.
One of the things with these miniatures is that you want to make sure they don't look too much like toys. Blocky miniatures like this can often just look like you cracked them out of a plastic packet but I think the work here on the highlighting and shading really elevates them.
I also like that the scheme is fitting for the official artwork and really evokes the look and feel of the 80s and 90s when it comes to that cartoon show vibe. The bright spots of yellow really make each of the miniatures pop for example.
An absolutely stunning collection of robots which are hopefully just the start of a load of additional Bot War miniatures by rum8le. I really like how the project went through each of the steps that they took to bring these miniatures to life too. Well worth diving into if you've been inspired to play a bit of Bot War!
Malifaux by soapdodger
Lastly, soapdodger wanted a bit of a palette cleanser and so turned his attention away from Infinity and instead explored the world of Malifaux. In typical soapdodger style, he was able to paint up an absolutely stunning collection of miniatures.
I really like all of the work that soapdodger has done here, especially when it comes to the "effects" on most of the miniatures. The splashes of blood on this fellow above for example are expertly done. It takes a really steady hand to throw a mess on a miniature once you've finished it!
This crew looks like it has come right out of the artwork for Malifaux. I was particularly taken by the work here on this chap above. The blade on that saw and the distressing that has gone into the tank was particularly eyecatching.
It's neat to see that soapdodger was able to step out of the High Sci-Fi/Anime style that you get in Infinity and get down and dirty with a bit of Malifaux. If your attention was captured by the previews here then you need go and see how all of these characters came to life over on the project link above.

@soapdodger those Malifaux mini’s are excellent. That is some very fine / tidy / detailed work. Especially bearing in mind how small and thin some of Wyrd’s figures are.
Kudos sir!
Nice work everybody. And @rayzryr makes the best use from G’Wullu paint bottles XD And he reminds me that I still have an Aenur, Sword Of Twilight to paint somewhere….
Excellent work once again by everyone, especially loving the Bot war’s.
Cheers guys and Ben the oh mighty keeper of the buttons! I am usually shy about these things as I am never happy with what I paint, but I like these so I’ll take it!
Fantastic wood elves (shamed to say I had not visited this project before now it’s super deep) bod bot wars which I was a little behind on. Also now fixed!
Swanky paint all.
@rayzryr Its good to see the Aenur model you’ve got. I think mine might be floating around somewhere and its nice to know there are other people who enjoyed Mordheim in the long long ago.
@rum8le I think the palette definitely hits a good spot thinking back to Gen1 cartoons on Saturdays. A sense of warm fuzzies all in pewter and paint.
@soapdodger I think that my Malifaux figures might well be in need of sprucing up should I ever set them down anywhere near yours. Good work indeed.
Aw sweet, thank you Ben!
Congratulations to @soapdodger and @Rum8le too! Both of your projects are fantastic ?
@sundancer gotta be some good use for the old paint pots, we know they didn’t keep paint so well ?
Indeed. You’d be lucky if they hadn’t dried out on your way home from the shop. Worst bottles ever.
