Community Spotlight: Damn, Dirty Apes, Fighting Pits & Tinkering With Terrain
November 13, 2024 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Simian Empire Miniatures by jeffersonpowers
We start off this week having a look at what jeffersonpowers has been up to. They have been drawn into the Pulp Sci-Fi world of Star Schlock by Gerry and started painted up some of the Simian Empire miniatures from the folks at Wunkay.
jeffersonpowers decided to go with a Planet Of The Apes scheme for these miniatures rather than the studio scheme used for the Star Schlock miniatures. It works really nicely and is an immediate nod to the films. The various miniatures look great and I like the attention to detail on the purple uniforms of the regular soldiers in particular.
A classic mixture of basecoat, washes and highlights has brought these miniatures to life and I think the simple basing helps to really show off the miniature as well. It's a nice "generic Sci-Fi film set" look by which I mean it could be any quarry in Wales or an industrial backlot in America.
jeffersonpowers has talked about looking forward to dive in and paint the Explorer Corps. They are wondering about the best paint scheme to use so maybe you could dive into the comments and share your thoughts over on the project link above.
Necromunda Fighting Pit by LiamFishwick
Stepping from Pulp Sci-Fi to the Grimdark, LiamFishwick has been working on scratch building a Fighting Pit for use in a special scenario in their Necromunda campaign. This project isn't finished just yet, but the idea is awesome and I love the idea of making a specific piece of terrain for a scenario.
The base of the structure is a small wooden tray which has then been enhanced with the inclusion of plasticard, a BBQ vegetable grill (which makes the netting around the sides) and plenty of other odds and ends that have been taken from the bitz box.
The Fighting Pit has been coming together really nicely over the last few weeks and I have enjoyed the characterful additions to the terrain including the curling barbed wire around the tops of the fences. The gates are also needlessly(?) detailed but in the best way possible. I love how much attention is going into this Fighting Pit.
Paint has been going onto the project lately as well and it feels like it is starting to find itself stepping into the final stages. A liberal use of washes and pigment powders will end up getting added into the mix to make the terrain suitably grungy.
What's nice about this project is that it immediately got me thinking about how cool it would be to play out this fighting pit scenario. I hope that we get to see a blow-by-blow of this clash once the scenario has been played.
RPG Terrain by Liono58
Last but not least, we have Liono58 who has been working on some more terrain projects for use in their roleplaying games. Some little buildings were found in Michaels and so the grand journey began to turn these into buildings for use in their roleplaying games with the addition of some craft supplies.
A great start to the project came with the introduction of some sketches. I love a good sketch. This shows off the way that Liono58 wanted to take the core buildings and play around with them to make them suit their RPG campaign whilst also making ways for you to play in the footprint of the building.
Foam, coffee stirrers and the application of a foam cutter produced some great terrain which looks nice on the tabletop but then can be playable in roleplaying games thanks to the magnetisation of the bases underneath the buildings as you'll see below.
As you can see, the buildings got something of an overhaul from the Halloween range that was initially available and the new panels, roof sections and more look fantastic. I also like the bases underneath the buildings with the magnets in the corners so you can simply lift off the larger building and "play inside". This was the first of the builds and more is on the way. I think this looks great and shows off a good use of base structures and scratch-building techniques as well.
