Community Spotlight: CodeBlade, House Bolton & A Druidic Diorama!
January 10, 2024 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
CodeBlade by darkdanegan
darkdanegan has decided to dive into a fun new Cyberpunk game for the new year thanks to the folks from Neurocraft Studios. CodeBlade is relatively new and the rulebook is out there in the wild but the game allows you to snap up whatever miniatures you like to build your squads in-game. With that in mind, darkdanegan picked up the Human Interface: Nakamura Tower (HINT) miniatures which work exceptionally well.
Two teams/squads/warbands have been painted up for playing the game so far. One of these sets is for the Compliance Officers who are looking to establish some law and order in this Cyberpunk future. It turns out that some of the factions in CodeBlade match up with the miniatures from HINT pretty well and darkdanegan takes a bit of time in the project to explore both.
I like the Iron Samurai and they match up to the logo quite nicely which I think is cool. I love the helmets of those swordsmen and women in the middle and how their lithe forms contrast so nicely with the hulking badasses that are on either end.
Collecting these miniatures together, darkdanegan then dived into a fun test game just to get their head around the rules. It's neat to see that the game got to the tabletop so quickly! So often, games sit in that "I want to play" pile for years.
I can't wait to see more on CodeBlade and how this game slots into darkdanegan's gaming over the next few months. Some terrain has come from the likes of Corvus Belli and there are even some more gangs/squads/teams coming together to get painted. All looks good for this Cyberpunk future in 2024.
House Bolton by scarhandpainting
Next up, we're having a look at scarhandpainting and their work on House Bolton for use in A Song Of Ice & Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game. This is a pretty awesome commission that looks bloody brilliant and I love the way that this entire army and its various characters have come to life.
The characters are always a huge part of why A Song Of Ice & Fire draws me in and I am always tempted to dive in and try the game. I think the work on these dastardly Boltons is great and I love that the dark and gritty feel is carried through in their arms and armour. There is also just the right amount of blood here so it doesn't look comical.
The rest of the miniatures are all brilliant and I think the A Song Of Ice & Fire range, despite the duplicates within regiments, looks fantastic when it's all painted up. Once you get to this scale with loads of models ranking up to get stuck into the action, it doesn't matter if a couple of miniatures are the same. I feel like I'm talking myself into picking up one of the starter armies for this game at this point.
As you can see, the full force looks brilliant and properly brooding. The idea of this being a more "basic" paint scheme might seem mad but I think it works well here across a large Fantasy force. I personally would have done a bit more colour on the bases by making them a little lighter but I think it works well here to fit with the dark and gritty feel of House Bolton.
The Druid's Stone | The Passing Of Times by irishsteve
Last but not least, we have a wonderful addition to irishsteve's project with this impressive diorama. Based on a couple of miniatures from Reaper and Keith Parkinson, this is a stunning project that showcases some wonderful terrain building as well as some great painting on the miniatures themselves.
I like the painting of the two miniatures of course. The light blue of the dragon is a great contrast when set against the darker robes of the Druid. It works very well to mirror the artwork as well, especially with the Druid's Stone in the background. You get a real sense of the moment and these two characters at rest in the heart of an enchanted woodland.
Things go even madder once you take on the full scene itself. The amount of work that has gone into the trees, the landscape, the scattered leaves, the river and more is astounding.
A wonderful scene that hits that "enchanted forest" vibe on the head. The little stream winding its way through the middle of the scene is also great and helps to break things up and add some more movement to the scene. You can almost hear the rush of the wind through the branches and the bubble of that brook. A bloody brilliant diorama and one that features one hell of a plinth!

nice work!
Irishsteve’s diorama is stunning. I still don’t understand why this kind of diorama would be criticized for it being too big and empty in some painting contests (as I am sure it would be. At least, this side of the Channel…). This is near perfect!
(Well, the Bolton army and the Cyberpunks are sooo cool too! This is brillaint work, guys!)
