Community Spotlight: Celt-Iberians, Borris & Buddies + A Band Of Brothers!
August 4, 2021 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Celt-Iberians by zoidpinhead
We start off this week's Community Spotlight with a look at some Ancient miniatures. This is the work by zoidpinhead who has been painting up a force that can be used in SAGA: Age Of Hannibal. This has been designed as a force that can be used as Gauls or Iberians hence the Celt-Iberian naming convention!
The miniatures themselves have come from Wargames Foundry as well as a smattering of releases from Crusader Miniatures and I think they work exceedingly well together. I love the dirtier look that they have gone for with the miniatures which really grounds them in the period for me.
I am always taken by this period of history and I love the colours that you get throughout it. I know a lot of folks think that this is a time period mired in mud and brown leather but I like that we get to see more colour thanks to schemes like this. Look at that fantastic tattoo work for example!
I think this has come together as a really nice force. You've got a force of individual looking warriors which have then been tied together by some touches here and there. The swirling tattoos really do make them stand out and the style of their trousers. I also like the way the facial hair and spikey hair has been painted!
Borris & Friends by hairybrains
Next up, we're making a move to the world of Moonstone. This realm has been at the forefront of our minds recently thanks to Gerry and Free and it's cool to see it translating over into the community.
I really like the work here done by hairybrains. I think the contrast paints work really well on these miniatures and make them pop. I think it allows you to get very bright colours very easily thanks to the way that it shades the miniature. It also makes painting the miniatures much quicker!
Another aspect of these miniatures which I think really works is the bright green! I think it really suits the Fae theme of these characters and makes them stand out on the tabletop. It works well against the earthier tones for their outfits.
This feels like it was a great experiment in Moonstone and I hope that it will spur on hairybrains to do more work like this. It certainly adds to the charming and whimsical quality of these miniatures and has me pondering on which of them I'd like to pick up and paint. They are just so different!
Band Of Brothers by adamogelsby
Last but not least, we're turning our attention to adamogelsby. They have been putting together a project which charted the creation of different forces for World War II and Bolt Action. On one side you had Easy Company from Band Of Brothers and on the other, the Germans!
The Band Of Brothers boxed set from Warlord Games formed the basis of this project and it was great seeing how things came together when painting the miniatures. I really like the way the Americans turned out, especially when it came to the choice of green and how it works with that ruddy brown.
I always like seeing how Bolt Action miniatures look when they are finished up. I think the plastics from Warlord Games are some of the best and they manage to strike a balance between feeling "historical" whilst also being a little bit "action movie".
What I did like, even more, was that there was also a Battle Report in this project!
This game saw Easy Company clashing with the Germans on a rather awesome looking tabletop. The gun emplacement and such were assault by this team of soldiers and it played out particularly nicely. I won't spoil the outcome but it feels like it went well for Easy Company. It looked great, the pictures were well shot and it was an intriguing read! I hope we get more stories from this Band Of Brothers.

Thanks @brennon This is my second Golden Button this year! Really glad you liked them. I had great fun with the tattoos and they came out so much better than I thought I could do. Anyone worried about freehand work should just go for it. You might surprise yourselves like I did 🙂
Excellent work everyone, well done!
Some really nice choices this week. I want to try some of that tattoo work…
Really fantastic projects again, well earned buttons
I so need Boris!!!
Thanks @brennon, they were fun to paint and really suited to contrast paints. I tried not to look any existing artwork for them so that I didnt have a preconceived idea of what they looked like.
Now I’ve have to get some more before the new kickstarter turns up.
Well done to the other winners excellent work all round.
