Community Spotlight: Bulk BattleTech, Discworld Witches & Blanchitsu Eldar
June 7, 2023 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
BattleTech by sundancer
Jump into the world of BattleTech as we get stuck into the Community Spotlight for this week. sundancer has been working away on a lot (and I mean a lot) of BattleTech. Part new project, part Spring Clean Hobby Challenge, this project has been showing off all sorts of awesome mechs from this 6mm wargame, painted up using a mix of normal paints and speedy options!
I really like the way that these kinds of paints have enabled folks to dive in and paint up armies very, very quickly. It also opens up the options for those seeking to try out some fun techniques. For example, I really liked the look of the blended colours on the mech above!
If nothing else, I think I'm giving sundancer the Golden Button for this project simply because of the sheer scale of mechs they have dropped into the mix. I mean seriously, have a look at all of the different types of mech that sundancer has been tinkering with?! I also appreciate the fact that these miniatures have been painted with a proper cartoony look to them. It really makes them pop on the tabletop.
But wait, there's more! sundancer has got his work cut out when it comes to their BattleTech collection but they are powering through it at some pace. If you've ever wondered if someone was more obsessed with BattleTech than John, this is the answer.
It is worth diving into the project and having a look at some more of the work-in-progress pictures. Maybe, just maybe, you'll get some more information on how you might want to approach painting your own BattleTech miniatures for your collection. I can't wait to see more of these popping up on a hex map in the future.
Discworld Witches by draconis
We now turn our attention to draconis who has been working on a great mixture of miniatures from the depths of their collection. A few of the Micro Art Studios Discworld miniatures were painted recently and they look awesome.
These miniatures are definitely worth picking up if you're looking to paint some unique miniatures or you're just a fan of Discworld. There is so much character in the sculpts and I really like how draconis has been able to capture the three different characters and their personalities. I also have to commend draconis for the work on those striped trousers!
As well as the Witches getting painted up from the collection, they have also headed out on the road and had quite the journey! These Witches have been visiting castles, forests, gardens and more and enjoying the heck out of it!
I love that folks are actually getting out and about with their miniatures and probably looking a little bit odd as they lovingly place their miniatures on park benches and the like. It's also really great for getting a look at your miniatures in the natural light as we're admiring some lovely paint schemes! A lovely trio of miniatures and incredibly well-painted.
Blanchitsu Eldar by thursday
Last but not least, we have a rather fun look at how to paint your Warhammer 40,000 miniatures stylishly. John Blanche's artwork has informed the majority of the grimdark world we've come to know and love and so it seems like a fun experiment trying to paint miniatures in his style. That's exactly what thursday has been having a go at.
The painting has been done with a mix of woodstains and inks alongside washes and a bit of drybrushing. The Blanche artwork has been the inspiration for these miniatures and you can really see that style coming through in the miniatures that thursday has been working on here.
I think it looks great on the Farseer above but you can also see it come through really nicely on these older Guardian miniatures. The spot colours, like the red, really help to focus your attention and I think the bone/off-white is absolutely perfect for the Eldar as well as being a good nod towards Blanche's art style.
More work has been going into additional elements of this army including some Aspect Warriors now. I think that because the miniatures are old metal ones, that also feeds into the look and feel of the army. It feels retro, looks retro and should be fascinating seeing it all on the tabletop. I like folks that try something daring and different and this is most definitely up that street!

You are not worth it mate, lol
Congrats there btw
Thanks ?
For some reason my system has only now shown me this….
Had fun with the Witches on their travels.
It’s because the article only now has gotten live for “non backstagers” I guess. We get to see those nominees on the XLBS on Sundays.
This was meant to go live last week but we missed out on the Golden Buttons and images for the article. I made it private when I realised and we’ve just got around to updating it now that everyone is back.
New ComSpot coming next week (so that will be shown off in the XLBS this Sunday).
