Community Spotlight: Bounty Hunters, Mandalorians & Tiny Orcs
July 24, 2019 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Forums and Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking pieces this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Bossk by graystoak
The first miniature we're going to be looking at today is from graystoak and it's his take on Bossk from Star Wars: Legion. This is a fantastic take on one of the lesser-known, but well-loved characters from the Star Wars universe.
The fantastic painting here speaks for itself but the project has gone into great detail about the various stages that went into building up the character. I love the warm yellow against the scaley green with some wonderful touches here and there concerning the washing and highlighting.
I really like how the guns have come together as well. The little dabble of lighter colours across the gun and such give you the impression of a proper well-worn weapon. The white is also very nice indeed with a clean finish and a gentle degree of shading.
Sabine Wren by fourtytwo
We're now moving on to another character from the world of Star Wars, Sabine Wren. This take on the fan favourite character has been given a very colourful paint scheme which matches her look from the animated series.
Much like with the take on Bossk above, the colour choices and such here have been made to suit the setting and films. Sabine here has all of the bright colours you'd associate with her and the wonderful freehand on the helmet starts to take things to the next level.
It's always hard to get this much colour into a model without it looking like someone has just flicked their paintbrush across a model. Well, I think we can all agree that fourtytwo has done something pretty awesome here.
Special notice should be given to the brilliant look for the Dark Sabre that she's carrying. This is a very powerful weapon and an iconic one at that, so it needs to be given a degree of care and attention. Once again, I reckon you'd agree that it's looking ace. It has the look of the weapon we've seen in artwork and on the screen, and it's hard to get right considering the use of deep black fringed with white/grey.
10mm Orcs by torros
Last but not least we're looking to a smaller scale project from torros. Here he has been building on his Fantasy armies in 10mm with a warband of Orcs! And, they are looking fantastic.
Here you can see some of the warriors. Despite the fact that these fellows are so tiny I think the detail work on them is great. I like the neat, clean painting is what sells these smaller scale models and with a good degree of washing and subtle highlighting, they could then be taken to the next level. Big bold colours like red, blue and yellow work nicely as well to bring attention to key figures like Commanders and Standard Bearers.
The same care and attention has gone into these Orc Mages too. I really like the effect on the wood grain and the skeleton heads mounted on top of the staffs.
This also highlights getting the basing right for models like these. As well as using texture the use of flock and such really helps to build up a miniature but you have to be careful not to swamp them! I think torros has added just enough here to make it effective without taking away from the miniature.
This really has me interested in getting myself one of those Pendraken army sets to paint up in 10mm too!
