Community Spotlight: Bolt Action Battles, Battletech & Beast Snagga Orks!
September 15, 2021 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Bolt Action Battle Report by hegemongary
We start with something we're always asking for, a Battle Report! hegemongary has done just that through the medium of images and scrawled text. I gotta say, it has a charm all of its own and I really enjoyed following along with it!
This game took place somewhere in the depths of the Ardennes and saw the Germans mounting an assault on a Belgian position. For some reason (perhaps a weird portal?) a Japanese Officer found himself in the depths of the woods and both sides were eager to get their hands on him.
Each of the movements for the different turns was planned out and shown using the different arrows on the images. Beyond this, all the action was then brought to life through some very fun captions. I really like this. I do love some narrative and a bit of a run-down of the action but I also like this approach which is decidedly more comic book!
I also like that it tends to echo the fury of these troops as they are asked to do things by their "commander". "Bugger this for a game of soldier" was great to read and did bring a titter from me as I was reading through this.
There are loads of additional images for you to check out as part of the project which is linked above. You will also find the two army lists which were used for both sides so you can perhaps have a go at recreating this madcap adventure yourself.
Battletech Mercenary Locust by hearne
Next up, we have a project which seems somewhat inspired by the love John has shown for Battletech! Here we have a fantastic diorama which was put together by hearne showcasing a Mercenary Locust and her pilot.
This is an impressive build because it is bigger than your regular Battletech kit. This big resin kit was bashed together with a 1/48 F-16 cockpit in order to get the look of a pilot taking a moment to relax after a battle. A lot of the additional components here were scratch built and I think the final look is very impressive, especially when it's on the big base.
The base itself was snagged from Etsy but a lot of the additional components were thrown into the mix and worked into the final look of the piece. As a 28mm Battletech piece, this is very inspiring. I know a lot of folks are crying out for a Battletech Boot Camp at this point!
There are more images of this diorama for you to check out on the project link and there is also a brand new mech on the horizon for hearne to work on.
Beast Snagga Orks by hairybrains
Finally, we have some fantastic-looking Orks which were painted by hairybrains. I really like seeing people paint Orks as they can be super inventive with them. This is no different and the poppy colours here work really well.
hairybrains has done a superb job of painting up these Orks in a lurid green which still works well with their green skin. I wouldn't have thought it would pop but I think it looks great against the yellow armour and the metallics on the Boyz.
Things have also been taken to the next level with some really well painted Beast Snagga Orks across the board. I think this is a solidly tidy and well-thought-out scheme that is going to really pop on the tabletop. I am very impressed with the final look!
Things are even cooler once you bring in those amazing bases. I think the jungle theme works really well for the Beast Snagga Orks. You could just imagine them rampaging through a Death World as they hunt down the biggest and baddest Tyranids in the galaxy.
It is becoming increasingly hard to ignore how fun a Grot/Gretchin army would be. I love the idea of painting up a bunch of little lads and their big clanking robots.
