Community Spotlight: The Barons’ War, Dragon Empires & Swashbuckling Cats!
March 17, 2021 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
The Barons' War by panzerkaput
The first project that we're going to be looking at for this week is one that dives into the Medieval turmoil of The Barons' War. User panzerkaput has been having a lot of fun with this and painting up a range of miniatures from the Footsore collection.
A variety of excellent looking miniatures have been painted up including knights, named characters, monks, peasants and more who have all banded together under the say-so of one lord or another. The variety of styles apparent within this project is great and it shows off a lot of different techniques.
Many of the painted miniatures not only feature stunning work on their clothes and armour but also some very nice shield designs. A lot of it is freehand as you can see here and it looks top-notch. I'd be hard-pressed to complain about any of these being put in front of me to play with or against!
As has been pointed out by Gerry, the unfortunate side effect of the chosen paint scheme is that it does remind him of Aston Villa and therefore panzerkaput's golden button might be null and void. As a follower of Wolverhampton Wanderers, I have to concur.
With that being said, I can't be mad for very long. I really like the look of these miniatures and the project is capped off by an absolute wealth of historical information. There are huge sections of the project dedicated to the background to The Barons' War which is well worth diving into.
Dragon Empire by boomer
Stepping away from the historical, we also have the start of what should prove to be a fascinating project by boomer. This is some work on the towering Dragon Empire cavalry that you can get from the folks at Titan-Forge.
The painting here is pretty darn on point and I love the really nice contrast between the bright green and the red of the samurai. There is soooo much detail worked into the faces of the mounts and the samurai on the back and I am always seeing something new here and there when I take a closer look.
The idea is that these creatures and warriors will be used for SAGA: Age Of Magic but might also find themselves into a Warhammer-style Cathay army further down the line. They do look exceptionally extravagant. I mean, look at those bases too!
As well as working on the big Dragon Cavalry we also have some foot troops as well. These samurai look great and a lot of care and attention has gone into the armour and the faces in particular. They have even gone as far as to pick out the eyes and the mouth details!
I am looking forward to seeing more from this project as the Titan-Forge collection grows! Hopefully, it won't be too long until the next entry from boomer.
Burrows & Badgers by 144artist
Last but not least we have some work by 144artist who is always an inspiration to the community. We did look back over some of their work on Burrows & Badgers earlier in the year but I thought it would be great to shine a spotlight on this particular cat!
The Cat Duellist is one of my favourite models from the Burrows & Badgers collection and I think you can see why here. As well as allowing you to dive in and paint up fur in a variety of colours you've also got gorgeous clothing to work on too.
The cerulean blue of the cloak works really well against the ginger and white of the fur and special kudos should be given to the work on those eyes that are taking in their next quarry. This takes puss-in-boots to a whole new level for sure.
I would also recommend diving in and checking out the rest of the project from 144artist as there is a wealth of critters within. It might give you the inspiration to work on your next set of models and get out of a slump.

Great work all around ?
Some unfortunate colour choices aside ? some excellent work all round!
cheeky bugger 😉
It was never going to go by without being noted by *someone*
true
I went and “smashed” some of PK’s buttons as it were, to feel a bit less mean.
smash some, but comment that you would have smashed more if he had used the correct colours 😉
The Villa
Serious thanks there
Great work everybody !
@boomer Love your color scheme on the Samurai. Great paintjobs all around.
Well deserved.
Congrats to all – I especially like the bold colours and the execution on the Dragon Empire minis.
Excellent paint jobs all around. This is a bit lore snobby of me but for Warhammer it would be a Nippon (WHFB Japan) army since Cathay was supposed to fantasy China in the older lore and fan lists, and until they do something other than limited forge world minis and vague hints at new stuff oldhammer (WHFB 1 thru 8) with fan lists is the only real satisfactory way to play either for that setting (9th age and KoW are different worlds).
Really nice work by all!
