Community Spotlight: Armada Ships, World Of Warcraft Heroes & The Wealdgeist
May 1, 2024 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Basilean Fleet by ewokkebab
We start off this week with a rather awesome collection of naval miniatures from ewokkebab who has been painting away on Kings Of War: Armada. An impressive Basilean fleet has come to life over the last couple of weeks and it is looking very impressive.
Fantasy-based naval wargames are awesome and I do like all of the strange magical ships that people come up with but there's something to be said for the classic fluttering sails and flags that are reminiscent of Historical fleets of old. Human fleets in Fantasy games tend to always fit that vibe and I think the Basileans then turn things up to eleven with all of the extra detail worked into their hulls and such.
ewokkebab has done a fantastic job on these ships and it's really inspiring me to have a look back at the Black Seas range that I started painting last year. Maybe I could actually get back to working on those and bringing them to life without getting disheartened by the minute details that you need to tackle!
When you see all of the miniatures together like this as a full fleet, you get the full effect. I love those impressive sails and the off-white works well to make the ships look like they have been out on the high seas for a while. It then works well against the wood of the hulls and the blue (and metallics) that cover the rest of the ships.
World Of Warcraft Board Game by robojoel
Next up, we have some work by robojoel who has been tackling a board game that I really wanted back in the day. During Fantasy Flight Games glory days they did a World Of Warcraft board game that was packed with all manner of miniatures representing the heroes and monsters of this Fantasy world. Well, robojoel is now tackling painting all of these miniatures!
This was one of the mammoth board games from Fantasy Flight Games that came in one of their coffin boxes. It was laden with plastic and I would always drool over the miniatures they put inside. They seem like the perfect miniatures to tackle with a liberal amount of Contrast paint and that is what robojoel has been doing here. A whole bunch of the characters have been painted up alongside a bunch of the creatures that you'll encounter in your adventures.
I always like projects with a purpose and a board game that needs painting up is perfect for that. robojoel wants to make sure that the game looks good on the tabletop and so whilst they could well have been dragged off in different directions, especially when it comes to added detail, robojoel is sticking to their principles. These miniatures are going to be painted up quickly and in bold, vibrant colours as you can see here.
All of the miniatures are looking great and I like the additional gaming elements worked into the painting. Colouring the base rims helps when grouping these and spotting which groups are where in the middle of gameplay. Some more of the characters have been added in recent days and it has been fun seeing how they have all come to life. I am looking forward to the result when all of these miniatures are arrayed on the tabletop for gaming goodness!
Wealdgeist by demonsub
Last but not least, we're looking at the work of demonsub who has been painting up some of the great Wealdgeist range from Conquest Games as part of a bit of a spring clean. These miniatures really match up with my love of folklore and Fantasy and so it's great to see these coming to life.
The thing that's great about these is that they all essentially feature the same texture and look. All of the miniatures are crafted from wood and so when it comes to painting these up, they look like they would be quick and easy to do. You then have to work out how best to make these all feel unique on the tabletop. That has been achieved with the way the weapons and such have been painted as well as the basing.
I think these look brilliant and I think the way that the browns and greens have been blended together looks gorgeous. I think the bases also look amazing, especially with the addition of the leaf scatter and the big, poppy mushrooms. The finished results have turned into an amazing warband.
I like that the leader of this particular group has been painted as a different type of tree. The birch look works very nicely compared to the oaky look of the rest of the group. This is a genuinely stunning range of miniatures and I might need to get some of these for myself.
