Community Spotlight: German Aircraft, Groovy Greeks & Animal Warriors
May 1, 2019 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Forums and Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking pieces this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Blood Red Skies Germans by wolfch
The first of the pieces we're looking at today is an amazing paint job on these stunning German Aircraft from Warlord Games' Blood Red Skies.
This is an absolutely sterling job on these aircraft, especially the work that indicates the fading colour between the darker green on top and the lighter colours below, good camouflage against anti-air guns down below.
These particular planes are from the ZG 26 that flew during the Battle Of Britain, 5th Staffeln to be exact as was mentioned in the forums. Blood Red Skies has always been one of those games that I think I could really get into and I'm always impressed when I see peoples work painting up these tiny aircraft. Kudos to the awesome way the transfers have been applied too, seamlessly fitting into the paint scheme.
Mortal Gods Greeks by panzerkaput
Next up we're looking at some Mortal Gods Greeks from panzerkaput. This is a packed warband showing off the colour and intricacies that you get with armies of the period.
The force has been designed as a generic Greek State so it could be used for either Spartans or Athenians in the game itself. A lot of work has gone into making sure that the poppy colours really work across the units, the shields being the real highlight that steal the show.
I also really like the additional work that has gone into the clothing here, bringing lots of bright reds, blues and such to the fore. Even the white has been done in a really clean way which works very nicely for the leader.
The skintones are also something I was impressed by. They have been done to look a little more natural with plenty of additional highlighting done to make the musculature stand out. It's not quite how I would have approached it but I think it delivers the desired effect.
I look forward to seeing the Spartan army that panzerkaput is going to be working on next.
Burrows & Badgers by mellett68
Last but certainly not least we have some Burrows & Badgers miniatures painted up by mellett68.
I picked out two in particular which I think really stuck out from his collection. The Wildcat Warrior is fantastic with lots of effort being put into the fur to make it really stand out. By contrast, you have the bright blue cloak which serves as a nice striking point of colour. The framing of the model with that wildflower base is also wonderful to see.
I also picked up the Squirrel here...
Once again, amazing fur work is nice to see here even with the little slip here and there. The bright yellow cloak and robe combination, however, is what drew my attention. I think that looks fantastic and shows that you can make yellow really work! The purple sash is also a nice touch, again providing you with a lovely bit of contrast.
Hopefully more basing will be applied to this lovely lady so that she gets an equally wild woodland to run through.

Al very nice and colourful and not a single “grim dark”‘ish entry. Even the German planes look colourful.
Congrats guys, some lovely stuff here as always!
Really love the shields on the Greeks!
Eight year old me keeps going nuts over those tiny planes. I have Greeks in my immediate future, and hope mine turn out anything close to those. Burrows and Badgers is such a refreshing change from the grittiness of so many fantasy games.
*chapeau* all round!
Absolutely stunning Button awards ( as is usual ).The BF 110’s are my top pick, followed by the Greeks.I’ll probably pick up a couple of boxes of Spartans ( maybe more ) for AoM’s Great Kingdoms,at least until an ” Age of Ancients ” arrives from Studio Tomahawk ( that’s just me wishing,i have no idea if it will ever come to pass ).
So thats where @dignitys yellow blanket went, nice to see it being put to good use. Im sure theres enough left to do a few more B & B characters. Liking the generic Greek stuff, and with so much colour your never going to miss them on the table. Those German Aircraft are amazing, it takes me back to when i used to do the Airfix / Match Box ones, those where the days. I may just buy a set.....probably get Stukas as ive always loved them, and see if ive still got it when it comes to planes. Congratulations… Read more »
I only just saw this! Thanks very much for your kind words.
I’ve tidied up the stray yellow on the fur I promise! I was so excited about painting yellow well for the first time ever that I took a photo straight away 🙂
To solve the fire engine mystery, it’s my eldest’s lunchbox for nursery 🙂
Oh man thank you so much for the kind comments. I spotted it yesterday while I was putting info on games I play and I went “oh…. someone got a golden button for BOS, let’s check it out for inspiration” and then I got goose bumps ^^
Many many thanks for that.
@doomzombie @sundancer @kantor72 Glad you like them 🙂
More blood red skies in the queue in the coming weeks, but next will be some 40K as I need some for my gaming club.
