Always thought a multi game system campaign based around iron maiden artwork would be a lot of fun. You choose the game that suits the artwork, so if you take powerslave as an example you could either play 40k and be necrons vs who ever, or a historical. brave new world could be infinity, as could somewhere in time, given all the ice on the cover seventh son would be frostgrave or a frozen world, if we include singles as well, then the trooper would have to be a Napoleonic and ace’s high would have to be bolt action. As… Read more »
I assume with each appropriate album blasting in the background? 😀
It would be rude not to 😉
I love the idea of a campaign. I thought the worldwide campaigns GW used to run were some of the best ideas they ever had and I still have all the old maps. I’ve been snapping up their recent campaign books as well and can’t wait to try them out. I tried cobbling together campaigns when I was younger and I found using the Dawn of War Dark Crusade map as a model worked really well. It’s a straight forward conquest with certain territories giving you small bonuses. Games like Space Hulk and Assassinorum work really well when worked into… Read more »
Used to love putting chaos and orks into space hulk, never played execution force with anything but chaos yet, but really thats a game with minimal tweaks that would suit any race, how cool would it be to infiltrate a tomb world, or stop a waaagh in its tracks through taking out the boss while they are all in a fungus brew stupor…
Narrative leagues/campaigns can be very enjoyable experiences. My biggest difficulty in working out a campaign is having reasons a large variety of factions all getting involved. It’s much less difficult to work up a campaign with only 2 or 3 factions (rather than 10 or 11 for example).
One option that’s been used numerous times is narrowing down the number of ‘sides’ by combining factions with similar goals into alliances (though each faction could have their own goals as well as the overall alliance goals).
nice article Sam,
If you have the space you could have a game like mighty empires for the campaign map fighting the battles as/when army’s clash on a second table.
The complexity of campaigning often puts people off of trying to start a campaign. We have run many campaigns some successful some not so, but they all start with the same gusto. So what was difference. Well timing as they say in comedy is everything (that or a pie in the face), that is the same with a campaign. The length of time it runs can mean it can run out of steam before it has had a chance to finish properly. The other timing issue is actually often more relevant and that is in real time and date what… Read more »
I think many people make the mistake of not working out what their campaigning priority is. One option is to have a completely narrative campaign. No mechanics to ‘game the game’, so no bonuses for winning, no stat increases etc. Or at least, not that come as something you can plan for. The idea is that you as a group work out what would be the result of a game and then basically design the scenario for the next game. Which could see one player agreeing to use less points or start in a better position or whatever. But the… Read more »
Over the years I have had a great deal of fun running campaigns using Warhammer the Generals Compendium as their frame work.
