He meant as a miniature – their owner was due to retire his old marines for brand spanking Primaris tomorrow.

Also I believe in the fluff they do sometimes retire as a sort; but instead of going off to live in a retirement village with a bunch of other old folks and while away the remaining days with golf and bridge, marines retire to jobs such as training the new recruits, guarding the reliquaries back at the fortress monestary, etc. And usually it’s due to being invilided out rather than old age or choice.
I thought that “retirement” usually meant being converted to a dreadnought or a servitor
