Back in the olden days it was common for a wargame to have a GM. Rick wrote an interesting column for a WS&S a few months back about the evolution of games design and how it evolved out the GM. I do still GM now and then for narrative scenarios but as it takes a lot of effort, it is only now and then.
many years ago, I played a game of Battletech, what was different about it though was it was a double blind game, each player and the ref as we call him were in different rooms, the refs board was kept covered when the players entered his room (we both waited out side his room when we had finished out turns) then one of us would enter and tell the ref what we had done, then leave, and the next player followed suit. Also Inquisitor had a GM. And that game still lives on with a good fanbase playing in 28mm instead of the 54mm the game originally used.
I’m not sure where or how I’d introduce random events or achievements into a game, but it’d be loads of fun to try! Random weather events is an obvious choice. Though adding in extra objectives or actions the players could do would be good. Grudges between characters on the field, interaction with the terrain more. Anyone else here play Chivalry: Medieval Warfare? Just borrow from that! One player defends a village while the other has to murder villages and burn it to the ground.
