I’m doing that kind of equipment upgrade at home. Yeah, I’m that kind of nuts.
Damn, @warzan – yeah, those are roughly the kind of appliances we sell here at the company where I work. Yeah …
Dem Bitches Ain’t Cheep!
So … if I’m hearing this right, you’re basically building your own on-prem enterprise cloud?
Looks like a solid setup, I know you guys will know this but when you get to the point that the server fills, make sure and number the drives with the corresponding slot you have them inserted to. It’s not the end of the world if you don’t but as a DIT/ Data Wrangler we have similar old-wives tales and practices when dealing with our RAID’s. Equally I know you guys will already know about the write penalty you’ll get at RAID 6, you’ll likely need to schedule when you transfer your footage etc onto the server as write speed… Read more »
We will make sure we do all of the above, thanks for the heads up!
Me to . I was thinking of buying an SD card for my tablet
@dracs
?
Wait… Bloodletters?! Ooooh! I guess I just never realized that lesser Khornate demons were just frustrated writers! 😛
hehe I know this kind of post will attract all us techies itching to give information that either already been discussed around the solution design and hardware so I won’t go into it, but your issue of OLD storage have you considered moving this out to the cloud, AWS Storage Gateway comes to mind this is extremely cheap at pence per GB has availability that no one running their own hosting could match and can be presented to the local LAN in many ways. This means you keep you high-performance SAN for what is important say 6 months of data… Read more »
I’d be lying if I said I’d understood all of that, but it sounded exciting anyway!
I do have one piece of techie advice to give you though. Don’t insert a mic the wrong way round and then have to replace this, okay?
Slightly more seriously… are you worried about physical security? Isn’t this kind of thing a tempting target for thieves? I hope the building is secure (especially with regards the prisoners you keep in your dungeon trying to escape all the time).
there’s no soundcard in there, so it should be safe … right ? 😉
ooh looking good I remember painting many boxes similar to that one the biggest was the Sun/IBM server units the size of phone boxes but never got to see any of the shinny goodies that went in them (that’s were the texture paint process was used @warzan )
5yrs ago my company decided we would move everything to the cloud. I believe we use them all – AWS, Azure and Google. I have no idea what hardware like that even looks like anymore except when I build my own PC’s. HOWEVER, I am very much interested in seeing more in regards to the Valhalla game. I know I am dreaming but I kinda hope that is how the KS started if finally delivered LOL! A great bit of PR. I know the polish version of the game did well and the only reason I heard about it was… Read more »
I’m glad to see that you guys did not take out a loan to buy this stuff and just saved up the money, it should be the way it’s always done. People way often spend money they don’t have by borrowing it and then not being able to pay it back. This already causes enough problems in the world and I’m happy you’re not contributing to that. I love to see how you guys get on with the tech upgrade, I’ve been out of the IT business for way too long myself to really know without extensive research what’s good… Read more »
It’s all fun and games until someone gets shot in the back with a laser and gets sucked into the computer.
I believe that You received the letter from Ragnar Lothbrok himself – lucky You!
hey Łukasz great idea with letter ! good luck with kickstarter !
Be interested to see how you find the storage setup – i’m a storage admin by day – so if you do need any help or ideas for monitoring solutions, or IO tuning and performance, then feel free to ask.
For us not techies, basically you have brought a bigger Imp, with a bigger selection of paints and paper!
Sam will get the Reference.
Isn’t that how “Skynet” started?
Odin owns you all!
Happy for you Warren and rest of beasts! @dracs I have supported that game when they did it in Polish I am so pleased they are going english now, Valhalla is fantastic game. you will have great time playing it.
Nerdgasms are a common thing on this site for me… all the pretties. But when it comes to new PC hardware, especially nice complicated set ups like this that’s when the biggest nerdgasms of them all come! OOF! That looks like a tasty box! I work at a commercial printers, and I’ve become the IT guy, not officially, but literally every single IT query now comes through me because I have a history of actually fixing stuff where our Paid IT company don’t! We’re a printer that has multiple presses, Litho, digital, wide format, and a team of 7 full… Read more »
