Atomic Mass Reveal Marvel Crisis Protocol Miniatures Game!
August 1, 2019 by brennon
Atomic Mass Games were hosted by Fantasy Flight last night to reveal something else with a Marvel spin. Marvel Crisis Protocol is a new miniatures game coming to the market soon and it's packed with some cool looking heroes and villains.
The game will feature a core set which features some famous heroes like Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Black Widow and Captain Marvel against nefarious foes like Ultron, Red Skull and Doctor Octavius as you can see here. Future 'packs' will come with larger than life heroes and villains like Hulk and M.O.D.O.K.
A Youtuber by the name of Crabbok got a first look at the game in the video below, shown off on a stylish board made for Gen Con. Check it out.
It looks like it is going to be quick and fun to play with a good balance between powerful heroes like Hulk and those with a little more mortality to worry about like Black Widow. Atomic Mass Games also talked more about the game in the In-Flight Report starting at around 1hour!
I did call that we needed a big miniatures game based on the Marvel licence. It will be interesting to see just how freeform this game is going to be. We do know that the game is set on 3x3 tables so it's close and brutal right away. Additionally, terrain is going to be key to your games. It wouldn't be Hulk without the chance for him to throw cars and rip pillars down to whack his foes.
The game will focus in on players being able to freely bring together both villains and heroes and then clash with your friends.
As well as being focused in a clash between you and your friends you will also be able to embrace some cool game modes like raids where you and another player take on a big boss controlled by someone else. There will also be a narrative campaign set which allows you to follow a story with a set team of heroes.
All of the miniatures are going to be multi-part plastics so there will be plenty of hobby involved in bringing this to life. They do look exceptionally well detailed and I can't wait to see what they do going forward.
I still think that a combative miniatures experience isn't quite what I was looking for with a Marvel miniatures game. I think it's cool, obviously, but I am more drawn to the narrative and raid-style games where there is more focus on teaming up against a villainous foe.
Man, it is a good time to be a Marvel fan!
"Man, it is a good time to be a Marvel fan!"
Having just watched The Boys (despite the dodgy accent), I’ll never be able to look a Superhero in the eyes again!
Robert, The Boys have got to be the coolest, darkest superhero show I have ever seen and the black humour is brilliant. Don’t get me started on the dolphin in the van scene.
If these scale with my 28/30mm collection my wallet is doomed…..and that’s before the even release Dr Doom
Looks to be around 28/32mm heroic in scale yeah. My wallet is screwed too, I am all in on this AND the LCG
In the Q & A portion of the In-flight Will, the presenter for Atomic Mass Games, was asked the scale and he said 40mm.
(Crabbok also streamed the In-flight but left his stream going for this portion, unlike FFG.)
I think that might be to prevent people from using the Model Knight or HeroClix minis.
Ah that makes sense – must have skipped over that bit a little in my excitement
So ….. Another bootcamp might be in the offing once Warren sees this?
I mean, I would totally be up for that AND I would want to participate
Oh and if you haven’t seen it, Team Covenant have a playthrough of the LCG….

Yeah, we featured it in the news story we put out this morning 🙂
Cheers for the info dude.
Tis a shame as I wont get them now but at least my wallet is safe 🙂
@brennon see, this is what I meant…
….I need more sleep…. can’t read to save my life today…
I think my wallet just screamed
Thinking about it, why not something lime the Marvel ultimate Alliance series? A sort of Gloomhaven reskin where you get to unlock more heroes and powers as you play through co-op dungeons? I’m not saying I have room for another epic dungeon crawler, but with a healthy dose of fun and OP character power interactions it could be a lot of fun. Keeping it simple could be a great way to bring younger people in to the hobby too, especially if it had a quick simple side game skirmish vs mode for between games or to experiment with character combos
I talked about this kind of idea over on my blog page @lawnor – I think that would be a perfect format
https://becauseofdragons.blogspot.com/2019/07/its-time-for-proper-marvel-tabletop.html
Great minds think alike. I like the idea of expansion boxes with new characters and new story arcs. All in one boxes like Gloomhaven can be an intimidating all consuming commitment. Making it its own universe frees them up to tell whatever stories they like with whatever characters. It’d probably be cheaper to licence too. Did you consider maybe Plaid Hat Games to make this? While I’ve not actually played Mice and Mystics or Stuffed fables, I’d really like to and I do hear they are great fun narrative games. I think focusing on accessibility (In terms of cost, simplicity… Read more »
I did think Plaid Hat but I don’t think they’re big enough to carry something like this. I do think Atomic Mass could rock this BUT I really am looking forward to the alternative play modes beyond versus.
I’ve never heard of Atomic Mass before so I don’t know what they are capable of. I am curious to see what the campaign mode is, but i suspect its going to be an afterthought rather than their driving concept. I’ve seen war games advertise campaign modes in the past and they’ve not really lived up to the dream in my limited experience. I fear that will hold true here. Still, if the buy in price is right and i hear good things then I might pick it up. We do still have 2/3rds of gloomhaven to go after over… Read more »
From what I can gather it’s made up of some folks from the team who worked on Warmachine etc, so they do have some pedigree in wargaming at least.
I think they are very new though but…Marvel heh!
AMG have only been around for a year and this is their first product.
They don’t even appear to have a public website yet – which seems very strange to have a launch like this without one.
They do have a Facebook page, and I think Twitter, maybe Instagram.
Maybe they are a team created specifically for this project? Hopefully they won’t go full FFG on this if they are operating under a different name. I don’t like having to buy stuff I don’t want to get an extra card for the stuff I already bought. FFG make good stuff, but sometimes the FFG-ness seems to get in the way, although I’ve not played much.
Atomic Mass appear to be mainly former Privateer Press staff. Will Schick did the presentation last night.
Sorry yeah, that’s what I meant rather than FFG!
Well thats interesting. I’m a big fan of Warmachine and Hordes. Never got in to their other stuff but never had a chance to give much of it a try.
Marvel themed miniatures game from FFG eh? Seems interesting.
Not FFG, Atomic Mass Games
Think in the Q & A that Will said that AMG – they are already at the acronym stage – have some sort of relationship with Asmodee, the parent company of FFG.
I suspect the line between FFG and AMG is a thin one
Just had a squiz at the rules, has linked below, and there are credits for Asmodee North America and it’s various employees.
And also Privateer Press?
Yeah, they did a lot of work on the game
Assembled heroes which all look great.
Each one of us will be able to assemble the Avengers 😉
This will be interesting.
I have to say, a company that doesn’t have a website yet but launches a massive IP game like this, sounds unorganized or a bit flighty!
But I’d love some new Marvel Miniatures at least for RPGs.
I’ll trust OTT to keep me informed on this one.
Very interested in this!!! A vivid conversation has been going on on my FB wall and I’d like someone to confirm : some say the figures are 40mm. Is that correct, or are they 32mm?
40mm according to the inflight report folks are saying.
I will take the larger miniatures as they will be easier to paint and will have more detail.
I wish they’d stuck with a recognised scale, I don’t want to have to find and buy new terrain to make this work…
Agreed … replacing terrain or building and acquiring more terrain that I’ve already acquired or built before reduces my enthusiasm a bit. I’ll wait to see some pictures that compare size and scale to other games … if I can repurpose Knight Models terrain and all the stuff I built to be compatible with that scale, then I’ll be much more likely to give this game a go.
Crap on a stick this looks good. I saw a plastic frame online. Explains both: Knight models discontinuing their marvel stuff and Will Pagani leaving Privateer Press.
From all the pictures here is a list of the heroes and villains
Winter Solider
Venom
Black Panther
Okoye
Shuri
Killmonger??? – I think
Doctor Octopus
Hulk
Ultron
Modock
Spiderman
Captain America
Baron Zemo
Ironman
Captain Marvel
Red Skull
Black Widow
Crossbones
There is a picture of future releases. It looks like there will be hero 2 packs
Thor and Valkyre
Gamora and Nova
Rocket and Groot
Starlord
Winter Soldier and Vision
Spider-man (Miles Morales) and Spider-Gwen
Corvis Glaive and Proxima Midnight
Hel and Loki
That looks good. Nice sculpts and in plastic to make life a lot easier. knight models dc stuff put me off with the metal and very high price… and Marvel is more interesting to me.
Downside is that it will be quite a dull game until you have 20-30 miniatures released at least for squad variability… and that will cost a lot probably.
However… we can rely on the fans for home-brew rules and I do have a shit load of heroclix lying about that I used for a supers RPG and I can rebase them easily enough.
I’m becoming old and jaded ..lol .. On one hand, playing a 40mm(? prob 32 heroic)Marvel game sounds fun. But I have way too many miniatures at the moment. So many miniatures already to paint. I can already play this game and toss stuff around in Heroclix… minis may not be as pretty, but again… it’s ready to go out of the box, and the rules are tight.
On the fence about this one. It might go on my Christmas list. That subway table though.. very cool!!
Empty wallet, “It is inevitable “!!!
A bootcamp would be amazing!
?
Crabbok is great! He mainly covers the Fantasy Flight Star Wars games, so it’s nice to see him covering other things, too.
From the information i have got its 40mm figures. I am looking forward to this game.
I am in on it too. Even if I don’t like the game I can always use the figures for Knight Models old Marvel Superhero game which was very enjoyable.
The IP will make is sell, and the price point is decent considering its 40mm scale, but it really sucks that it isn’t a standardized hobby scale, and the character 2 packs are pretty dumb if you only want 1. Why would I want the Winter Soldier and Vision? I’m stuck paying $40 MSRP for 1 character and wasting the other one unless someone else wants just that one.
FYI, their website is finally live
https://www.atomicmassgames.com/
This has my interest. Nice sharp figures made of plastic should be fun to paint.
I hope this doesn’t mean the end of the heroclix marvel figures, and this probably explains why knightnmodels.lost the licence for their marvel line. But if the rules are any good I think this is gonna be a winner.
40$ for two plastic miniatures? And i tought KM were expensive. Those have to be very good miniatures to justify that price.
Disney wants its license fees.
AMG’s website now has the rules available in two different PDF versions, one for printing and one for digital devices.
Both available here: https://www.atomicmassgames.com/rules
Just had a squiz at the rules, and at least 2 former(?) Privateer Press employees are involved in the creation of this game – Will and Dallas being the names I recognise.
There are credits for Asmodee North America and it’s various employees.
And also Privateer Press has a credit for “Additional Contribution”?
Could be that this is a joint venture of some sort?
Could Asmodee NA be eyeing up another acquisition in PP?
Interesting…..
From the credits, Asmodee holds the Marvel License. I do not believe it is a joint venture. I believe some of the PP employees left to start this company. We have no idea what “Additional Contribution” might be. Maybe they were allowed to use studio space or get their web guys to spin up the website. Whatever it is, I do not believe PP is for sale but who knows.
ok – take all my money
@andrax Do not forget that spare organs can fetch you a pretty penny.
Don’t think I’m sold on these to be honest. I’ll wait and see but can’t see myself getting into this one.
This looks amazing! I cannot wait to pick this up. I wondered why there was a mass exodus of Privateer Press employees last year. Now we know they created Atomic Mass Games. Really looking forward to the campaign system!
