The Mighty Ymir Stomps Forth For Mythic Battles: Ragnarok!
May 29, 2018 by brennon
Monolith has given us our first look at one of the titanic monsters you'll be bringing to the table when they launch Mythic Battles: Ragnarok next year. I've been playing too much God Of War not to be in love with this already. Meet the mighty Ymir...
Ymir will be one of the mighty Giants or Jotunn that you will be bringing to the tabletop during your games. He is a monstrous creature, born of ice and rage...and as you'll see, the model is looking stunning.
There have been a few changes from the artwork by Aleksi Briclot but I think that the essence of the creature has been maintained. I would have perhaps liked him to be a little bulkier but Arnaud Boudoiron has done a good job I think.
This isn't all we see of Ymir though. The team at Monolith has gone the extra step and made a version of him to show off his scale...
He certainly looks bigger than some of the Gods from Mythic Battles: Pantheon, more in line with the Titans perhaps. I think I may have already decided what I'm spending some money on next year...and I haven't even played/painted much of Pantheon yet!
What do you think of Ymir?

That is one great looking monster.
Ragnarok has been a firm fitting on my gaming calendar since receiving MB:P and the Viking Warrior it contained 😀 .It’s going to be massive…..
Awesome! I did not join in on the first Game. But I think I can´t resit a Ragnarok version.
so going to get in on that, thank god it’s next year, time to start saving 😉
Haha, there’s even Mythic Battles: Pantheon 2.0 for you to have to weigh up too!
A bit of a correction, Mythic Battles: Pantheon 1.5. Unless you are speaking about something other than the reprint. I say 1.5 because that is what the team has been saying and there are a few additional figures and rules coming but for the large part it is the same as original KS.
Yes true, 1.5
Already went in big on the first KS for that. But missed out on Rise of the Titans and Hephaestus expansions so……
This Kickstarter will be an all in for me – surely – hope they will have pledge for that….
Wow a fabulous alternative to the DnD gargoyles for one I think.
I don’t have a problem with this miniature not being bulkier. I think miniatures are bulked up and ‘heriocised’ too much as it is. In fact, to the contrary, i think that it’s … unfortunate perhaps … that the icicles have been made chunkier, less numerous and less pointy than the artwork, and that the celtic stone is quite chunky and sits on top of the ice instead of being frozen over by it. I think this miniature could have benefitted from being made of a translucent material rather than an opaque one. I think a lot will come down… Read more »
Artwork looks fantastic, model very good too, not sure about the eyes though on the model. Artwork seems more Alien like without the eyes, but face not bad though either, toss up which version I prefer, both seem pretty cool and scary looking. Either way I’ll likely be all in on this. Maybe get alternate sculpt but kinda doubt it.
Pfft, who needs a wallet anyway? I need a break in my project queue. I’m barely going to have finished Gloomhaven, MB:P, Rising Sun before Joan of Arc gets here. And there’s new MB:P content next week with the new KS. Don’t even start asking when I’m going to get around to KDM.
first things first, i’m super excited for Ragnorok. given how good a game Pantheon is and now how stress tested its been, i expect Ragnorok to just pur. I’m also really interested to see what they can achieve with the sculpts now that they’re incorporating more hard plastic into their miniatures. but more than any of this it’s the theme that ,no doubt like many others, has me oh so excited. Now the art work is very cool but the sculpt its self is not a great likeness. not the sculptors fault, but the medium. none of the torque in… Read more »
Absolutely lovely model. I have absolutely no clue how I would paint it though!!
I would be interested to know what the thinking was behind the changes made from the artwork to the miniature, for this miniature and other miniatures. I suspect that in this case, as in the majority of other cases, at least part of the reason is to make it easier to paint the miniature using techniques that don’t require as much 2 dimensional artistry. For example, putting in the eyes and unsmoothing the surface of the head means that this miniature can be given ‘detail’ with fairly simple techniques, such as washes and drybrushing, as opposed to needing to paint… Read more »
Oh, bugger!
My credit card has only just recovered from MB:P the first time around, now Ragnarok looks just as enticing and it will be hard to resist any new shinies in MB:P 1.5.
My finances are doooomed!!
YEEESSS!!
Bulkier? He is large enough that the entire world could be built from his body… 😉
With this sort of art direction for the project, I’m really excited for what the rest of the Ragnarok set will look like. This is going to be a heart-breakingly stunning range.
It doesnt seem that the sculpt is getting alot of love. I love it though, very impressive size and the model looks terrifying.
Im really looking forward to this one, i do wish it wasnt such a wait but i suppose it gives me lots of time to get my other projects completed!
Odin’s beard! That is incredible!
So excited not only to get a shot at MB, but with a theme that appeals to me a bit more. Ymir here looks like a pretty awesome start!
Grimnir (Odin in disguise) speaks to Agnar in The Poetic Edda – from “Grimnismål”
“Out of Ymir’s flesh was fashioned the earth,
And the ocean out of his blood;
Of his bones the hills, of his hair the trees,
Of his skull the heavens high.”
“Mithgarth the gods from his eyebrows made,
And set for the sons of men;
And out of his brain the baleful clouds
They made to move on high.”
“Mithgarth” here is Midgard / Middle-Earth, our own world.
I will pay all-in pledge for sure
On first glance I liked it, but now, compared to the pose in the artwork, which looks menacing, the model looks like an old man using a rock as a crutch shouting at someone to get out of his garden.
to be fair, it is the first being =really old, and it gave birth to both male and female from his armpits and a six headed giant from his legs.
That would make anyone crotchety.
Very true, poor fella needs a chair and a blanket.
Well, that six headed giant is definitely crotchety.
So glad this is next year, I need a break. Too much stuff coming out this year. I jumped on Pantheon, the game is great, and an even better value. 0 regrets.
I love the Mythic Battles franchise. I did not get all of it the first time around so here goes the wallet.
I went all in on MB:P, and Ragnarok pushes even more of the right buttons for me (lining in Norway and all that). I’m all-in as well!
Looking forward to February ’19,the MB:P 1.5 update will be well received and to be getting Ymir early as well as Dionysus added to the Greek Gods is a very good thing.
