Steamforged Head To The Swamps With New Epic Encounters Sets
October 29, 2020 by brennon
Steamforged Games continues to explore dungeon-delving options for your games of Dungeons & Dragons and beyond with two new Epic Encounters sets for release soon. We're heading down into stinky swamps with this new pair of released and we start with Swamp Of The Hydra.
Swamp Of The Hydra Set // Steamforged Games
Much like with the rest of the Epic Encounters sets, this pack comes with a massive Hydra monster for you to drop into your campaigns as a terrifying boss. As well as the massive Hydra miniature which is in line with other 28/32mm miniatures out there on the market, you'll also get the playspace to fight out your encounter and a few little accessories to help make it more memorable.

This is certainly an interesting way for Steamforged Games to approach creating new miniatures for the tabletop. It doesn't rely on them having to come up with the rules as Wizards Of The Coast have already done that and Dungeons & Dragons is absolutely massive right now. This offers a little spark of creativity for Dungeon Masters to play around with and I do like the idea of theming a section of a campaign around the different boxes Steamforged have in their collection.
Village Of The Goblin Chief
For example, perhaps you want to mix this Village Of The Goblin Chief set in alongside the Swamp Of The Hydra? Your heroes could be venturing down into the swamps to find out why these creatures have been attacking local villages only to find out that the Hydra has driven them from their homes.

You could play the first few encounters as straight forward combats but then transition into a more complex story where maybe the Chief of this tribe has taken a band of his Goblins off to worship at the foot of the Hydra. The other Goblins aren't quite so happy with this and so you might get tasked to help them get rid of their mad Chief and defeat the Hydra so they can live in their swamp in peace!

You could also just go the standard route and have these Goblins just standing in the way of your next box of loot! As mentioned above, the good thing about these sets is that they spark creativity and get you thinking about how you could best use these creatures over successive adventures on the tabletop.

This (and all the Epic Encounters sets) seems like a good way to actually build up a reserve of miniatures to use later on down the line too. If you've been buying these packs as they came out then you now have a Dragon, Frost Giant, Hydra, Goblins, Kobolds and Orcs at your disposal. That's most of the staple D&D miniatures sorted.
Are you tempted to give these Epic Encounters sets a look?

The goblins look more like gremlins…. but I like the hydra.
I rather like they take on goblins and that hydra is impressive.
I think this is my favourite set so far. The Goblins have a pet Flail Snail as well. 🙂
Hail Hydra is looking great.
Love the goblins especially the frog riding chieftain.
That is not the Chief. He is a standing figure with a mask (not pictured above).
Ooh he’s still looking great.
This whole series of box sets look great, and reasonable value for some very creative sculpts. I’d expect the minis to look pretty close to the renders from SFG too.
These would make good expansions to dungeon saga too, just knock up some stats and maps for yourself.
Love the hydra, gobbo’s would take a bit of getting used to though.
I like the goblin frog rider, not too much most of the rest but, i like themes of their sets though
These look great although would be good to see actual minis from the company and not just renders.
If you brought one of these you’d have all the ‘specials’ for a Saga Age of Magic or Warlords of Erehwon army.

Finally. It’s always been a pain to find mini’s for various written adventures. I think a company should make encounter sets for popular D&D adventures, as well as include their own adventures for various game systems and levels, even providing support by releasing a new adventure for one or more adventure sets every month or so.
