Wyrd Miniatures Show Their True Colours
December 1, 2013 by dracs
The other day we saw that Wyrd Miniatures are holding a sale on certain items, among which are their special edition crew boxes made from coloured or translucent plastics. Some pictures of these crews have appeared s we get to see how they look in their news colours.
The good thing about these is that they are tournament legal without needing any painting, so they are ready to play once you get them.
However, to me the models look no where near as good with the coloured plastic. They seem to lose a lot of their details, especially the translucent sculpts.
What are your thoughts on these coloured editions of the miniatures?

Transparent models like this make sense if the models enter something like stealth mode – such as when Mercs produced a transparent Kemvar set.
From the pictures these just look… meh! Wyrd miniatures are fantastic designs but these just look like something you’d find in a happy meal- if you really can’t paint then basecoat in white and use a sepia wash or similar!
The trick to using transparent models are inks and washes. They add shadow to details, but leave the large areas transparent. There are also special transparent paints, used in custom toy hobby/industry, that might fit well with these sculpts.
I am a Malifaux fan to be straight about it but I would avoid all of the casts barring possibly ‘Darkness’ in this material. Sorry but this is a dead end idea.
The tentacle thing looks interesting, the others are a bit meh…
And how come they’re tournament legal? Is there a special exception for these models?
