Andy and Darrell take a look at the named characters from the new Vampire Counts Army Book.
Wicked! I shall save this viewing pleasure for later. Cheers to the Beast of War team for producing these videos.
Good video guys. Just want to weigh in with a bit of advice on the SC’s. I’ve found that for new players who are learning the game, SC’s can be a really good way to go. They allow you to play around with special skills and learn what works and what doesn’t. Vlad provides a good safety net for new players coming back on a 2+ and he can be healed by Isabella and necromancers. Generic characters are much better…I’ve always felt that the pre-built guys were really there to help you jump right in and get your feet wet.… Read more »
Vlad doesn’t have 5 wounds…
Vlad is totally worth his points. He is a hybrid Mage and combat general, he is good in combat, can on average regain a wound each other turn, causes Terror on -1Ld (thus potentially reducing incoming hit and making his own more accurate), is level 3 Wizard (and as such can regain wounds from spellcasting too), has a good ward, average Armor, and can on a 2+ revive and move to another unit.
Tell me another model in any other book who can do all that under 500. Yeah, you can’t.
Put him in a unit with the screaming banner and he gets even better.
Why not go crazy and add a Vampire with Fear Incarnate?
3d6 Terror Test (taking the highest two results) with -1 to Ld and you have to reroll the test if you pass (or negate the reroll)
Put them in a Grave Guard horde unit (with Barrow Banner), a BSB with the Screaming Banner (the same Vampire or a Wight King) and go to town wreaking stuff. A big point sink, but very very effective.
Correction/Addendum: (or negate the reroll from enemy BSB) on the end of second line
From von Carstein’s I least like from Konrad becouse he might be called The Beast but his special rule is major risk. He might get stupidy instead of frenzy if rolls are bad. Mannfred is total best. Vampire Lord who is level 4 wizard is totaly worth his points. Vlad and Isabella need each other to be useful. Isabella’s Blood Chalice of Bathori helps to keep Vlad alive even more.
Kemmler is actually very good choice for certain kind of VC armies (summoning heavy onces) but I think that Krell is not worth his points.
In the last book, I used to take Konrad as a support character in low pt games. His “one bat short” rule hasn’t changed at all, but he was 20 pts less. I had a blast playing him from time to time. He’ll mow through tons of regular infantry like no-one else. He’s a glass cannon…and against certain armies that’s not a problem. My main issue with Konrad at this point has to do with his inability to cast. If he cant take over the army after the death of your general he’s a bit of a liability for his… Read more »
I actually find all of the characters with the exception of Konrad to be pretty decent as they are fitting the trend of Fantasy special characters now being something to field occasionally for a change compared to 40k where characters are needed to field a specific type of force e.g. Space Marine chapter master SC’s or are pretty damn good for what they do e.g. Doom of Malantai. Still for what they are do they are not bad Vlad is a standard vampire lord with a decent mix of abilities and pretty darn hard to kill, Isabella as always is… Read more »
I still think you can pretty nicely build armies themed around the vampire bloodlines. The Strigoi for one, have more options now with the Crypt Horrors. Lahmians can be themed around the Coven Throne, Necrarchs around heavy spellcasting and Blood Dragons around combaty vampire lords and blood knights.
But yes it would have been nice to see bloodline specific vampire powers and more special characters outside of the Carstein family. But all in all I’m really pleased with the current vampire counts book.
With all vampire counts characters, special or otherwise, you have to remember that they can recover wounds from external sources. This means that their points value must be higher than a charcater from an army that can’t do this.
Great video guys, but I urge you to read the special rules a little bit more carefully, or you might give people the wrong idea. For example:
– The Hunger rule only restores a single wound on a roll of a 6, if one or more models are slain by the vampire in the combat phase.
– Vlad has only 3 wounds
– Krell has Thoughness 5 instead of 4, and he does not come in with Heroic KB just like that, he has to be in the same unit with the Lichemaster
Keep it going, I’m excited for the other videos!! 🙂
+10 Karma for keeping them right! 😉
I’ll speak to @beerogre and @darrell about perhaps adding an errata to the articles of videos in future, it’s very difficult not to make mistakes etc (hell I’ve even read stuff out wrong from a page on camera!) but perhaps things like this can be pulled from the comments and into a section of the article?
Not just for VC Week, but maybe as a standard practice for highlighting errors – or even valid opinions or tips…
yeah it does just seem this is your first look at the book, and first look at any vampire book since your going oh i bet they got the ring abilty of vlad from trayzan, well no the ring abilty came about quite a few years ago. Also if your building an army to be based of certain spells thats not something you shouldnt really be doing but if you do you make it so your certain to get those spells. Dark acolyte means after you have cast invocation you roll a D3 and add this value to the casting… Read more »
Most of the hickups of the video have been mentioned above; apart from that a decent video 🙂 When looking at Vlad´s points costs, you should also keep in mind that having their general killed is very damaging to VC armies, and Vlad is about the most unkillable general you can get! His hunger rule, t Isabella´s chalice (if you combine them) and the signature effect of the lore of Vampires, plus Invocation of Nehek, means that he´s extremely hard to take out through conventional means, and thanks to the Von Carstein Ring he can also withstand cannonballs or killing… Read more »
*roll their FEAR test with 3d6, not just any LD… but I hope I got my point across ^^
Guys seriously, 1st off randomness is a point of WFB secondly Vlad and Isabella can be fielded in the same army at 2.4k as Vlad is a Lord and Isabella is a hero. Lords and Heros take up a different 25% of your full value. Also they aint that expensive as you can easly spend way more than 600points on a Vampire Lord. Also Konrad is amazing, he is pretty much going to kill alot of models he comes into contact with. Against a unit of Ogres he can kill 13 in one turn. 4 attack base + paired weapon… Read more »
So far I’m rather rusty on rules and will only make a fool of myself if I to add to this. So I’ll just say some of those models look great. I’d like to have an all wright army with that Krell dude leading them.
