Travel To Lake-Town With New Hobbit Releases
January 4, 2014 by brennon
Games Workshop haven't forgot The Hobbit franchise during the new year despite the hordes of Tyranids descending on tabletops. They have traveled to Lake-town and provided us with some quite awesome looking figures.
First up we'll take a look at the new characters that have come out this month. It starts with a very good looking new Gandalf model followed by Bard, The Master and Alfrid to make things a bit more insidious.
There have been some problems in the past with the finecast models coming out of Games Workshop for The Hobbit but I think that this time around they have done a very good job. Gandalf in particular is looking brilliant in my opinion.
I have to say, once again, I am kind of impressed with Games Workshop. They have gone a very nice job on these Lake-town soldiers and while it would be bloody expensive for you to make up an army of them just using these chaps you can mix them in with your existing Dale soldiers and make a good force using these as Captains.
I'm very taken by the Bowmen as I think they have a great look to them and the whole flavour of 'Dale', while not how I imagined it as a child, has actually grown on me; despite their silly helmets.
I say these are a great selection from Games Workshop.
What about you?

I agree those are very nice archers. Looks like the sculpter either shoots or has taken the time and watched people who do.
They even have quivers where they wouldn’t have to change hands with the bow to get an arrow out
There a lot of models on the market that look like they are going to do more damage to themselves than to their intended target but these are great.
They are better than the last lot I agree, however, whilst I think the Gandalf is good, I cant help but think the very similarly posed (with added sword for dynamism) Knight Models version is just all around better.
That Gandalf miniature is just stunning. It’s not that it’s necessarily the best Gandalf miniature I’ve ever seen, it’s mire like it’s the best Ian McKellen as Gandalf miniature I’ve ever seen. The way it captures his stance, the way he holds himself etc is just amazing in something so small.
The sculpts are good, some are great. But the prices are a bit mad for anything other than a small skirmish level game. Very small.
Really lovely models, but to start selling rank and file troops at 3 for £15 seems insane to me. There is nothing more to be said about GW’s pricing policy, but this seems like a real low point.
Much better than the weirdly poor last release for the Hobbit.
I like the Lake Town soldiers a lot. Are they Perry?
The most interesting thing about these latest releases was that Stephen Fry actually tweeted a pic of his model.
Lake town in general does feel more Mordheim meets Blackadder than LOTR to me.
It reminded me of Fable.
Yeah, actually, I can see that resemblance.
Gw are actually *giving* away the rules for the models from the first film now, it seems. -anyone got a story on that?

Hi Compel, they had a lot of complaints that the points values were not available in the mini rules book that came with the Escape from Goblin Town boxed set.
I quite like the pseudo Eastern-European look of the men of Dale – always imagined them as a kind of viking/eastern looking people and the Hobbit, for the most part has created an awesome aesthetic… If fireforge or the like go on to create medieval placcy Russians, with these as captains you could have a drop-dead gorgeous basis for a Rhovanian, let alone Dale army… furry hats and kite-shields, phwooooar!!
More impressive releases to THE HOBBIT range. The Master of Laketown model is superb. Unfortunately though I am not fond of the Bard model. Great design in all but the face, which looks like Jimmy Hill! Luke Evans will no doubt be beyond disappointed!
Fantastic sculpts, but I have never had a fine cast product free of air bubbles at best and sadly the price of £5.00 a figure for low grade troops is frankly insulting! I know steel molds are expensive, and I wish to support industry in the U.K. but almost no-one is going to buy them at that price!
