SEGA and Creative Assembly Bring the Warhammer World to Life
December 6, 2012 by dracs
SEGA and Creative Assembly, the creators behind the popular Total War series of games have announced that they are joining forces with Games Workshop to bring the fantasy world of Warhammer to life on your screens!
“With this year being our 25th anniversary”, said Tim Heaton, Studio Director at Creative Assembly, “it seems fitting for us to embark on such a dream project with such a well-established partner. The incredibly rich and detailed Warhammer world is something we grew up with, and has left an indelible imprint on us as both designers and gamers.”
“We’ll be doing the Warhammer universe justice in a way that has never been attempted before. We’re bringing those 25 years of experience and expertise in extremely high-scoring games to bear, delivering a Warhammer experience that videogamers will absolutely love.”
With the phenomenal success of the Total War games it will be interesting to see if Creative Assembly take Warhammer in a similar direction or decide to do something else entirely.
With this pedigree behind it, this is definitely something for all us gamers and hobbyists to keep an eye out for.

My wildest videogame related fantasies are coming true, it’s like someone at Sega can read my bloody mind!
Creative Assembly are easily the best fit for the Warhammer IP in my eyes too, translating the quality of large scale warfare from games such as Rome and Shogun Total War to the Warhammer Fantasy setting is just a fanboy’s dream come true!
Can’t wait to see more of this, it could be the beginning of something REALLY big for GW, Total War could take fantasy mainstream…
A total war warhammer game would sell like hot cakes I feel. This is an exciting announcement.
Won’t happen though. GW don’t want people to have full access to their game for free. I’ll be as disappointing as every other warhammer pc game. Some Russian lads have done a call of warhammer mod for medieval total war 2 that’s pretty good.
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1377 just the Call of Warhammer link in case anyone is interested I see what your saying, but its probably more likely they do an ‘official’ game based on the numerous Medieval 2 Mods, they have the engine, and for a team of skilled programmers I doubt it’ll be too difficult for them to produce. Compared to the new Shogun, even Napoleon Total War the old medieval 2 engine was a doddle to program for. Who knows. Could be quite a good, more streamlined version of some of the mods out their, but I reckon it may leave those poor… Read more »
Not every warhammer game has been bad, Dark Omen was a great tough game. Graphics, storyline and gameplay were really well done. Also the game received high prass from reviewers and gamers. It also still manages to make its way into top 100 game charts. Also Warhammer online age of reckoning was a huge success and won 28 awards over 3 years.
After Relic’s Dawn of War series and the visceral Space Marine videogame I really don’t see how you could come to that conclusion any more.
Creative Assembly are the best in the business at what they do, large scale medieval styled battles, which, theoretically, will fit in perfectly with the Warhammer aesthetic.
I never said 40k games were bad. i play all the dawn of war games. Shadow of the horned rat and dark omens were piss poor in my humble opinion though. mark of chaos is at best mediocre.
I’ve not mentioned either that you said 40k was bad. Where did you pull that from? You’re judging a Warhammer fantasy videogame from how long ago? There have been several Warhammer fantasy games released since then that actually weren’t half bad or are you just going to ignore those because it doesn’t fit in with your whining? The 40k videogames are plenty relevant to this discussion because it clearly indicates where GW are when it comes to licencing their games to other parties, not to mention the fact that Creative Assembly are amongst the most respected British video game developers… Read more »
Wow. How much of an arse are you appearing by making a statement that i am whining. I didn’t realise i wasn’t entitled to an opinion. Sorry about that. I like creative assembly. I like most of the 40k games. I reasonably have found that all the warhammer fantasy games have been lacking. Yes i bought them.
You mentioned how i could come to that conclusion since the release of space marine game. So yes you did mention 40k games. But just carry on hitting me with negative karma if it makes you feel happier with yourself.
I can’t reply to you for some reason, I wonder why? Do you always play the victim when someone disagrees with you?
Anyway, yeah. I think you couldn’t be more wrong at this stage. Time will tell of course.
This’ll be awesome!!
It’ll be a while before it comes out though. The next Total War game slated to come out is the Rome remake. Which means possibly a two year wait? Maybe just one? I’m hoping for one year.
It depends on how they approach it. Most of the total war games come with pretty noticeable gameplay and graphics improvements. They’re not just developing the game assets, they’re improving their engine. If they decide to release the first Warhammer game on an only slightly modified version of their latest engine they could produce it more quickly. Still, probably at least a year.
I can’t wait to see a properly polished Warhammer: Total War-esque game. I just hope they don’t make this too much of a gimmick and don’t run it out too quickly due to Publishers and Games Workshop pushing this. It needs to take its time and come out the other end nicely. Saying that I don’t think there has been a Total War game I haven’t been happy with. It might not even be done in the Total War style, but I think we can safely say we’re going to be seeing some mass battle game. I actually quite liked… Read more »
Given Games Workshop’s track record with Relic and THQ I’m inclined to feel that this is very positive news indeed, GW can really use this as a tool for their tabletop product and if properly nurtured it will act as a gateway for a new audience, they really should give CA plenty of time! Videogames, movies, books and music act as gateways for feeble minded sods like me anyway ¬_¬
As long as they eventually make all the races playable as their own armies, I will be happy.
They don’t have to them all at the start, maybe 4-5 of them and add others in expansions…..or heck even make them available for micro-transactions.
I think this is why Sega are so onboard with the idea, they can release expansions for plenty of armies and there’s plenty of content they can have CA work on and release every 6 months.
It’ll be a scenario like the Sims where there will be expansion packs for every day of the week!
Depending on how much of a fan you are, this won’t be a bad thing though! 😛
Yes!!
This news has made my Friday. I think the previous Fantasy video games are very under-rated (Dark Omen was what got me into wargaming in the first place and I still love to play even now)
If done properly and there’s no reason to think that it won’t, this will be great for Warhammer Fantasy.
Great, a company that for years now forgets to put an AI into their games recieved the warhammer lience 🙁
But on an upside everybody pretty much knows what they will be getting, since Creative didnt bring in new thoughts into their game for the last 5 titles.
If what we get is Total War in Warhammer Fantasy world then this could be rather awesome.
I keep trying Total War demos, thinking that it is definitely a series I should like. In fact, I’m downloading the Shogun 2 demo at the moment. But every time I play it, I just can’t get into it. It has a lot to do with the camera angles and perspectives.
@moriarty i can’t reply also. Not playing the victim at all. You were just deciding to make it personal for some unknown reason. You are actually by your reply choosing to displace and play the victim. If you can’t cope with people having a differing opinion to you or pulling you up on your tactics off making a statement then saying you didn’t that’s your issue. I personally suggest counselling or a good self help book. But don’t try and pull that crap with me. It doesn’t wash you purile child.
