The (Re)Introduction to Middle Earth with Games Workshop?
February 3, 2012 by brennon
Many of us have probably played the Lord of the Rings: Strategy Battle Game at some point in our hobby lives, but now with the re-release of so many books and model sets the system may be drawing in a few more fresh faces. So, Games Workshop have put together this introduction to Middle Earth which you can see above...
With the reboot of so many miniatures and the game itself, and with The Hobbit arriving later this year I have a real brewing desire to start playing this game once more.
Will any of you go back to Lord of the Rings?
Or if your new, will this be a game system for you?

That was kinda intresting to watch.
Will I get into LOTR? Depends if I can find the old boxes…with the recent price hike and the cost of new Finecast models, even though they’ve gone back to skirmish scale gaming it’s too rich for my blood.
I was thinking about that as a factor – but then I have to say that the Mines of Moria box set, as a starter is a pretty good deal for what you get. I mean I also have a bit of a foot in the door since I had a whole bunch of Dwarves from a while back and a mass of other LotR’s models…but for someone starting it the actual Moria box isn’t too bad. The main thing to think is that the smaller boxes, while annoying – are probably all you need to get yourself a small… Read more »
Before Christmas the Moria set was reduced (YES A SALE AT GW!) and was fantastic value.
Assume it will have gone back up to full retail cost now
You can sometimes buy the Moria box at a more reasonable price from Independant retailers.
BoW Ben.
The local store is selling out much of the LOTR stuff at reduced price. They even have some older boxes with the double amount of mini as ooposed to current ones.
Will I get back to playing LOTR? Probably not, even if I enjoyed the game around the time of it’s release. We’ll have to see how the new books pan out.
It does limit you to goblins and the admittedly nice troll though in terms of value – that’s the problem, you’ll always know it could be better and that doesn’t help enjoyment of a model…
Still, I think there are historical figures that might work for some of the Kingdoms of Men, plus the WGF orcs are pretty much Tolkienesque rather than CraftHammer greenskins since they look a lot like this:

Getting into LOTR with the official minis though…I can’t see it happening for me.
The problem here is the scale. If these were compatible with the 28mm plastic historic minis, that would be great. As it is you either have to go all-in with the official minis or play the game with 28mm substitutes, but then the argument of accessibility of the game is void.
A much better video than others of late
At just £41 from Wayland it’s a steal. You could pay that price just for scenary in some places.
could it be that GW have actually listened and planned ahead with the starter box?
I have space on my shelf even if it stays sealed in the wrapping.
Well the thing with GW starter boxes is that most of them are very good value for money lol – it’s just when it comes to making something playable out of it that the cost comes in. But, for someone who JUST wants to play the scenarios of the films/books the starter kit is pretty much a steal.
Plus dependant on what army you fancy playing you have a general pre-made.
Rangers – Aragorn
Minas Tirith – Boromir
Durin’s Folk – Gimli
Mirkwood Elves/Elves in General – Legolas
Gandalf and the Hobbits also obviously have their uses.
BoW Ben.
Only place you’d pay £41 for the scenery in the box is GW dude 😛 anywere else for 40 notes you’d get it pre painted at least.
That was actually a pretty good vid…about time they got it right.
I agree with the reduction of the amount of figs in the unit boxes but Id rather they had remembered to also reduce the price by the same amount
Could be good times for lotr for the next 24 months
“The lord of the rings really needs no introduction” shut the hell up and get to the friggin point then.
Has anyone weighed the value of the gw models against those new lotr lego figures? Lego is expensive but it still might be a cheaper way to build an army and terrain than gw -with no painting.
The video was quite nice, but spoke too little of the game itself.
As far as I remenber as a skirmish game it was quite fun. I’ll be putting a tray of Uruks in one of my cases over the weekend ready for Monday club night.
There’s usually time for a quick game of something at the end of the night trhis might fit the bill.
i’ve always considered the LOTR games to be disposable “meh” games. There isn’t anything offensive to me, i just find both of the systems and all the models rather uninspiring.
