Reaper Preview the Bane of DnD, the Gelatinous Cube
October 4, 2013 by dracs
You never quite forget the first time your hero gets swallowed up by a Gelatinous Cube. Now Reaper are giving me 'Nam style flashbacks as they show off their take on the squishy monster on the Bones Kickstarter.
This cube looks great, it keeps the iconic cube shape while still giving the impression of oozing something utterly disgusting. Also, if the design wasn't cool enough, it should hopefully be translucent! So now you can watch your swallowed halfling character bobbing around inside the monster. Sylas, no!
Of course, with the success of the Kickstarter, a slimy cube isn't all we have to look forward to. Here are some more of the models which have popped up.
If you haven't already, be sure to head over to Kickstarter and check out Reaper Miniatures' ever growing range of Bones.
I’ve never understood why people are so fascinated by the gelatinous cube. It’s SO boring and devoid of creativity. This is a better model than most, though.
the cube is a classic at this point. I think its value at this point is more about remembering better times than the actual design of the cube. I find the idea that you can put characters inside is rather clever though.
I worked on a DnD game 15 years ago and it was a laughing point then, but it had to be done because it was “classic”. It’s different, at least. It just doesn’t conjure up adventure in my mind the way wizards and skeletons and treasure and traps do.
There isn’t, AFAIK, a lot of crossover into fantasy literature as there are with other monsters.
Gelatinous cubes only really make an appearance in cookery books, such as
1001 Things to Do with Jello, Eton Trifles and, In the Jelly of the Whale, how Jonah Survived.
I like it. It’s weird, slimey and doesnt walk on legs. I would however personally think it would look better if it had eyeballs growing inside and around it’s body.
