Mordheim Gets a ‘Lads Got Talent’ Upgrade into Heroheim
October 1, 2012 by brennon
Not long ago Sam looked into playing Mordheim for the first time, and this buoyed me back into the game too. I however turned to the fan made upgrade for the game named Coreheim. Coreheim sought to remove a lot of the unnecessary complications and streamline the rules into a fast paced game. However, even with this updated rules set the designers didn't think it was perfect...
So the next evolution has come along, and this time its been dubbed Heroheim. Coreheim was said to be too clinical in its approach to the game (which I do agree with) and while clearing up plenty of the rules was still a game where blobs of men rushed at each other. Heroheim seeks to solve those problems with a clearer focus on heroes and the individual squads of men within the game.
You can check out the different PDFs for the game on the Heroheim website and help with development by play testing. One of the questions I raised with the creators was the addition of more warbands. I enjoyed having access to more than just the core warbands, and apparently with this new version the options 'could' be present.
I suggest you check out both Hero and Coreheim and play a few games. It's certainly a great way to get playing Mordheim again.
Have you played Coreheim?

Nice, they even put the Fimir in.
It’s sad for me to say, I never played this game back in the day. I might just pick up a band for the fun of it.
A step in the right direction perhaps for coreheim but no thank you I will be sticking to Mordheim propper. I’ve never been a fan of coreheim, while some of the changes to things like how certain weapons worked were in line with house rules I support the simplification and overhauls to other aspects of the game were totally anathema to me. One of the most obviously good things about Heroheim to me is the added differences to some of the human warbands making where they are from have more meaning to the make up of the warband than just… Read more »
My feelings exactly. I wont touch coreheim, wont touch heroheim. We run Mordheim campaigns all the time and the only problem we encounter is that certain warbands can get incredibly unbalanced over time. At that point, we just declare a winner, retire our warbands, and move on to something else. We play to have “fun” and the original rules have that in spades. If you haven’t played yet…download the rule book….its free
There is also the option to play individual games as more of a narrative/rpg type thing. With a 3rd player essentially being a GM of sorts for the game.
Of course that is really not going to be an attractive thought to a win at all costs skaven sling line player. Though losing that sort of player is no great negative in my books.
I’ve never understood what the guy had against the Sisters of Sigmar. I always felt like Mordheim just needed a few house rules (mostly cheaper armor, -1 to hit with 2 weapons, -1 strength for slings). Sure, it will still be quirky, but that’s part of its charm!
There are some good ideas in Heroheim, like @tigernexus said, that could be easily included into the original Mordheim as house rules. But as I’ve said before, Mordheim has never been a game for munchkins, min-maxers or douchebag players. So trying to attain a fully balanced rule set feels a bit pointless. The game has always had a narrative element to it and for players willing embraced this, the games played are golden. In a sense, including a GM of sorts to guide the other players through a campaign is good idea if the player group doesn’t have the feel… Read more »
